Chicago Bulls Injury Update: Coby White Needs Even More Time ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bulls will have to wait even longer to bring Coby White back into the fold.

While the organization remained optimistic that White would join the team by the start of the regular season, that optimism quickly waned. White was never able to make it on the court for the preseason, and this resulted in the Bulls eventually ruling White out for multiple weeks.

The initial announcement was that White would continue to rehab his calf injury – which was first suffered in August – and be re-evaluated in two weeks. Of course, fingers were crossed that this re-evaluation would end in a green light for White to make his season debut early in November. But the Bulls shared some different news on Tuesday night.

Coby White’s Return Delayed Further

Head coach Billy Donovan told reporters ahead of the team’s meeting with the 76ers that Coby White would likely remain sidelined for a couple more weeks. The good news is that the guard sounds like he’s doing a lot more on the practice court, but the training staff has chosen to take things very slowly.

“The hope is that in a couple weeks, he’d play. That’s where we’re at. I watched him today. He is sprinting, running, cutting, jumping, trying to do everything completely full speed, working on his conditioning,” Donovan told the media (h/t Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic). “He’s felt really really good, but I think putting him in practice and feeling that tightness again, they want to ramp him up over a period of time.”

What Donovan is referring to is when White first attempted to ramp up for the regular season. The guard experienced some tightness in his calf, which promptly made the medical staff press the brakes. It sounds as though White has yet to experience that again and has only shown positive signs in recent weeks.

Nevertheless, I don’t think anyone can blame the Bulls or White for continuing to act with an abundance of caution. Far too many players around the league have seen calf issues turn into serious Achilles injuries over the last couple of years. Especially when we consider White’s looming 2026 free agency, ensuring that he returns fully healthy and avoids further injury trouble is equally a priority for both him and the organization.

To the Bulls’ credit, they have also managed pretty well without their projected leading scorer so far. They started the year 5-0 before suffering their first loss to the New York Knicks on the road. Their ability to push the pace and share the ball offensively has propelled them to a Top 5 offensive rating in the NBA.

At the same time, the Bulls are about to embark on their toughest stretch of the season yet. White’s absence could soon be felt more and more by this team, and it will be interesting to see if that creates a greater sense of urgency for him to give things a go.
