Taillon Has Horton’s Back, Earlier Reliever Signing, Massive Viewership, Execs, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Today is Trade Deadline Day in the NFL! No, it’s not quite like MLB’s Trade Deadline, but you’re still gonna want to know what’s happening. Make sure you’re perusing our coverage throughout the day!

Jameson Taillon wants to put in a good word for his Cubs rotation-mate in the NL Rookie of the Year race:

All really awesome exciting young players! But Cade literally carried our staff in the 2nd half during a playoff push/race. Also- WAR isn’t a perfect stat, especially for pitchers! It tells a good piece of the story. But it’s not everything!

— Jameson Taillon (@JTaillon50) November 4, 2025 I believe the voting concluded a while ago, but it’s still very nice of Taillon to say. He’s biased, of course, but he’s also not wrong – fWAR definitionally undervalues pitchers who outperform their FIP as much as Cade Horton did. We can debate how much of that is skill and repeatable, but his fifth-best ERA, for example, is what happened. Isn’t that what awards are measuring? © Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images The full slate of other award finalists is here. No huge surprises, and most of the races aren’t actually all that close. The AL MVP debate between Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh is probably the only significant controversy. Hey, a signing to discuss! The Orioles have re-signed 34-year-old swing man Dietrich Enns to a one-year, $2.625 million deal, with a $3.5 million club option for 2027. The deal replaces the $3 million club option the Orioles had on him for 2026, which apparently they weren’t quite going to exercise – so he gets a little less, and they get an option for 2027 if he has a good season. Enns had returned from pitching in Korea as a starter, signing a minor league deal with the Tigers before eventually being sent to the O’s for the second half, where he pitched quite well (3.14 ERA, mostly matching peripherals, over 28.2 innings). This tends to be the price range for solid but unspectacular relievers in this age range, and it’s sometimes an area where the Cubs dabble if they feel they can get a little more value out of a guy than he’s showed previously. Caleb Thielbar got $2.75 million from the Cubs last year, and obviously he was fantastic. You can make it work in this tier without breaking the bank. You just have to be really good at selection, recruiting, and game-planning. Viewership for Game Seven of the World Series was massive:

— Sports Media Watch (@paulsen_smw) November 3, 2025 Gabe Kapler is back in a top baseball role, but this time he’s leading a front office rather than a dugout:

The Marlins announced that they have promoted Gabe Kapler from assistant general manager to general manager pic.twitter.com/xlPWBmNvPO

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) November 3, 2025 Kapler has certainly had a one-of-a-kind path. He was a player, then a minor league manager, then a player again, then a coach for Team Israel, then an entrepreneur in the digital autographs world, then a TV guy, then a player development director for the Dodgers, then a manager for the Phillies and Giants, then an AGM for the Marlins, and now a GM. You can’t accuse him of not having a breadth of baseball experience. Speaking of unique baseball executives, this would certainly be unique (and extreeeeemely Rockies):

Source: Adam Ottavino has spoken with Rockies owner Dick Monfort about the team's head of baseball operations opening.Ottavino, a Northeastern alum who turns 40 this month, pitched in the majors as recently as April with the Yankees. He spent 2012-18 with the Rockies.

— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) November 3, 2025

Running a baseball ops dept or managing has been a goal of Ottavino. Among the reasons he played Winter Ball in the D.R. after the 2024 season was prep for post career — to improve his Spanish skills and better understand such a vital feeder system to MLB. t.co/oWUZqsMIJA

— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) November 3, 2025 That isn’t to say Adam Ottavino couldn’t be good at the job. But it would certainly be atypical for a former player to jump straight into the top baseball role (the Giants are currently doing it with Buster Posey, though he was part of the ownership group and executive board for a couple years post-playing before he took over as the president of baseball operations). It’s also just funny because we were JUST SAYING how the Rockies were FINALLY going to get a real head of baseball operations from among the pool of qualified up-and-comer types … and then the two finalists, DBacks AGM Amiel Sawdaye and Guardians AGM Matt Forman, were suddenly out of the running for reasons no one quite knows. The Athletic report also indicates it’s unclear whether the Rockies were going back to other earlier interviews, or just starting over from scratch (which makes me wonder if that’s why this Ottavino stuff is coming out now). The GM Meetings are next week, by the way. Oh, and the Rockies don’t have a manager yet either, since they were waiting on the new top baseball man to make that selection. Rockies gonna Rockie.
