Matas Buzelis’ Start to the Season Puts Him Among Some Exciting & Elite Company ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

While there is a lot to like about the Chicago Bulls’ 5-1 start to the regular season, the play of Matas Buzelis remains near the top of the list.

The development of the second year forward is arguably the most important storyline for this organization. The Bulls have been in obvious need of a true, high-impact star for years, and Buzelis has flashed the kind of two-way skills that suggest he could become that star. To begin the year, he has shown the growth many hoped to see after his first full NBA offseason. He’s averaged 15.7 points and 4.3 rebounds a night while shooting 48.6 percent from the field and 12-29 from downtown. In other words, he’s essentially doubled his points per game from last season, as he has embraced a more prominent on-ball scoring role with the second unit.

To be sure, Buzelis hasn’t been perfect. Whether it be fouling out against the Magic or failing to grab a single rebound against the Knicks, there are still times when his age peeks through. There is no question that he still has a way to go before the general public considers him a future All-Star. But that’s perfectly fine. All the Bulls should want to see in the first few weeks of Year 2 is pretty much exactly what they have been seeing.

You haven’t won a home opener in years? Buzelis finishes as the second-leading scorer and sets a physical tone with a 7-7 showing at the free-throw line. Hawks steal the lead late in the second half? Buzelis drives right at one of their top defenders and reclaims the lead. Two former franchise centerpieces come to town? Buzelis drops a season-high 27 points and finishes a +18. The Knicks are dominating behind the arc? Buzelis sinks four threes in an effort to keep his team alive.

At the end of the day, there are so many signs that Buzelis is on the brink of transforming into one of the Bulls’ next marquee players. And this includes one pretty jaw-dropping stat.

Matas Buzelis Could Join Some Incredible Company

Before the Chicago Bulls tipped off for Round 2 against the New York Knicks, Will Gottlieb of CHGO pointed out a pretty incredible Matas Buzelis stat on the app formerly known as Twitter.

Only a select few players have ever averaged at least 15.0 points, 1.5 made threes, and 1.0 blocks while being at least six-foot-ten and age 21 or younger. Who are those players, you ask? Kevin Durant, Chet Holmgren, Kristaps Prozingis, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Victor Wembanyama. Buzelis sat right among that group going into Sunday night.

Playing with some @Stathead filters: Matas is in real unicorn territory Players who have averaged 15+ ppg, 1.5+ 3PM, 1+ blk at 6'10 or taller and age 21 or younger pic.twitter.com/KRr5V1DyP2

Now, technically, he dropped out of this category after failing to record a block at Madison Square Garden and seeing his season average dip to 0.8. But even if you adjust Stathead’s filters to make it 0.8 blocks or higher, Buzelis is the only player added to this bunch.

Also, let’s be honest, he is going to finish averaging at least 1.0 blocks a night. He practically did so last season while playing only over 10 minutes less per game. It also sure feels like he is destined to end this sophomore season averaging more than 15 points and 1.5 made threes. Buzelis has already seen his season average behind the arc bump up to 2.0 makes per game after his 4-6 shooting night against New York. He’s shown no hesitation in letting it fly from distance thus far, and it’s resulted in a 41.4 success rate.

Nevertheless, the main point is that the way Buzelis has started Year 2 of his career is extremely rare. His versatility is something we have only seen from a rare group of players – all of whom have already cemented themselves as All-NBA-caliber performers. Once again, there is still a lot for him to prove over the course of this season, but there is no denying that the trajectory he’s on is ridiculously exciting.

The more we get to see him play, the more it feels like the Chicago Bulls really landed someone special.
