Rookie Noa Essengue did not travel with the Chicago Bulls to New York this weekend.
In the hours leading up to the team’s second consecutive matchup with the Knicks, the team announced that Essengue has been sent to the G League. This is the first time the No. 12 overall pick has been assigned to the Windy City Bulls this season.
The Bulls will return to Chicago following Sunday night’s game for a meeting with the 76ers before going on the road for battles with the Bucks and Cavaliers. Whether or not Essengue will rejoin the team before this next road trip remains unclear.

Considering the Chicago Bulls’ deep rotation, it always felt likely that Essengue would end up with the Windy City Bulls early on. The 18-year-old is extremely raw and was thus immediately seen as a project piece as opposed to an instant contributor.
Likewise, as important as practicing with the big league squad can be, it’s unlikely he’s received as much attention as he may need as the coaching staff manages this better-than-expected start. He will be a focal point both on the practice court and in games whenever he is with the Windy City crew.
Speaking of which, the G League affiliate is currently in its training camp and will officially tip off the regular season later this week. Their first game will come on November 8 against the Wisconsin Herd in Hoffman Estates. After that, they will drive a couple of hours north to face the Herd on the road. So is Essengue destined to see his first taste of action in one of those games?
If one thing is for sure, this 5-0 start for the Bulls has only made it harder to see a path toward early meaningful playing time for the rookie. This could mean that the G League appearances could start to pile up. But, hey, isn’t that kind of a good problem to have? I’d rather have Essengue on the court and learning than riding the bench. And while I would normally push for Essengue to see those developmental minutes in the NBA regardless, I can’t make that argument after an undefeated start.
