The World Series ended, it was really exciting, boo the Dodgers, blah blah blah. THE OFFSEASON IS OFFICIALLY HERE! That’s what we’re really on about today, eh? Now it’s time for clubs to start their march toward the 2026 season, reconstructing or supplementing their rosters, and working on their organizations.
For the Chicago Cubs, coming off of a well-earned 92-win season, the needs on the big league roster are relatively specific. There will be bench and bullpen work as always, but this club needs to find a way to add AT LEAST one impactful starting pitcher (and more from there, depending on what happens with Shōta Imanaga), and an impact bat. The former need is pretty straightforward, and there are absolutely options available in free agency and in trade. The latter need is a little more tricky, as it could mean temporarily displacing Matt Shaw at third base despite his successful rookie season, or it could mean making a surprising move in the corner outfield or at designated hitter.
That’s all a very surface-level discussion, the particulars of which we’ll drill down into throughout the first month of the offseason. More than that, I’m hoping that the Cubs organization can be sufficiently creative to improve both the big league roster and the farm system, as well as any other structure that helps support near and long-term winning (front office, coaching staff, business operations, etc.). The offseason is an opportunity to get better in any and every way.
