Foothill girls volleyball tops Flintridge Prep to reach finals for first time ...Middle East

SANTA ANA — The Foothill girls volleyball team defeated Flintridge Prep, 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, in the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals on Saturday at Foothill High

With the victory, the fourth-seeded Knights (27-10) advance to the finals for the first time in program history.

They will face Cypress or St. Margaret’s in the final.

Foothill coach Aaron Wolfe was in awe of the run his team is on but sees room for improvement, as they prepare for the championship game in his first season at the helm.

“It’s a really cool moment, but I just see a lot of work we still have to do next week, which is cool,” Wolfe said. “I know we didn’t play our best match, so I’m excited to get a little bit better before the finals. But it’s surreal. My first year here, the girls are having a great time and we’re having a good run.”

Sophomore outside hitter June Stringham finished with a team-high 17 kills, senior opposite Haley Langdon added 11 kills and junior outside hitter Marisa Hilde chipped in eight kills.

Stringham also added 13 digs.

Foothill was able to take the opening set thanks to big swings by Stringham and Langdon and great block defense at the net.

The Knights took a 23-16 lead in the second set but the Wolves (25-4) responded with a 5-0 run that forced Wolfe to call timeout.

Foothill got the final two points and took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

Flintridge Prep was down 2-0 in its previous match but won in five sets against St. Joseph of Lakewood.

Despite solid play from outside hitters Makayla Jones and Abbie Callaway, the Wolves were in danger of being swept with the score tied 23-23.

Flintridge Prep took advantage of a service error by the Knights to help them take the third set 25-23 and avoid the sweep.

“I just told the girls, keep playing our volleyball, which is a really easy thing to say,” Wolfe said. “But I think they got a little nervous, we kept missing serves. We missed like 6 or 7 in that third set. So once the fourth set came around, we just had to play more consistently.”

“I think our block did a good job of handling their outsides and made them play a little bit of a different game,” he added. “I think Haley Langdon being 6-3 or whatever she is, it’s hard to play against.”

Wolfe wants to give his team a day off before preparations begin for the final.

“We are going to take Monday off for sure. I want to give them a nice rest,” Wolfe said. “I know that they’re a little bit sick, actually. So something like girls were sick over the weekend and just trying to get healthy and then feel really prepared on Friday or Saturday.”
