Week 9: Bears 16, Packers 10

It wasn’t pretty, but in Week 9 of the 1985 season, the Bears went into Lambeau Field and beat the Packers to make it two wins over Green Bay in the span of three weeks.

Walter Payton fumbled on the second play from scrimmage, leading to a Packers field goal and a 3-0 lead right off the bat. The Chicago offense stalled out a bit as its next four drives concluded in either a punt or a turnover on downs, but luckily, the defense held its water as well.

Trailing 3-0, the Bears got the ball back with 5:42 remaining in the first half. They leaned heavily on Walter Payton to get them down inside the five. Then, on 2nd & Goal from the four, Jim McMahon found William Perry for a four-yard touchdown pass with just 19 seconds left in the second quarter. After the extra point, the Bears took a 7-3 lead into the locker room.

The Bears and Packers traded punts out of the locker room, but Jim Zorn connected with Jessie Clark for a 55-yard touchdown pass on the game’s third series to give a 10-7 lead to the home team. Were the Packers about to end the Bears’ undefeated run at 8-0? Obviously not.

After the two teams traded scoreless drives, a Maury Buford punt pinned Green Bay inside their own five. Three plays later, Mongo McMichael sacked Jim Zorn for a seven-yard loss in the end zone for a safety. That cut the Packers’ lead to 10-9, and gave Chicago the ball back.

When Mike Ditka’s team did get the ball back, it took them just three plays to go 51 yards and take a 16-10 lead on a 27-yard TD run by Walter Payton.

After taking the lead, the defense finished the job and held Green Bay off the board over their next two drives to take a 16-10 win and a 9-0 record back to Chicago.
