Rome Odunze Will Play Despite Nagging Heel Injury ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

It was encouraging to see three of the four Chicago Bears receivers who missed Wednesday’s practice participate in activities on Thursday. That second-year wideout Rome Odunze was one of them was a good bit of news. And if you were wondering about Odunze’s availability for the team’s Week 9 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the answer will leave you exhaling with relief.

Phew!

As of Friday morning, the only receiver whose status isn’t trending in a positive direction is Luther Burden III. The rookie remains in concusison protocol. You can check out the updated Bears injury report here.

Rome Odunze continues to be a bright spot for the Bears offense

Rome Odunze is in the midst of a solid second season with the Chicago Bears. The 23-year-old wide receiver has hauled in 31 catches, racked up 473 receiving yard, and scored 5 touchdowns in seven games. He is also coming off of a 7-catch, 114-yard day against the Baltimore Ravens. Chicago’s offense should have done more when you consider Odunze’s production. Unfortunately, the Caleb Williams connection with Rome Odunze was the only thing cooking for QB1 in Week 8. That needs to change going into the team’s Week 9 showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals. Although, it shouldn’t happen at the expense of giving Odunze fewer targets.

This is what Rome Odunze’s 17-game pace looks like based on his first seven games of the 2025 NFL season:

In addition to his production, one of the things I have enjoyed most about Rome Odunze’s second season in Chicago is his growing confidence. Things could have gone sideways after an uneven rookie campaign with the Bears. Insead, we have seen Odunze grow into a lead receiving option for this team. I love what he told Bears Wire’s Brendan Sugrue in a recent interview:

“Honestly, I feel like I’m a great option on any given play, and I feel like my talents and abilities continue to display that. But at the end of the day, it’s a team game. I want the wide receiver core and the offense to eat as a whole. So I think I can facilitate that, but I’m an advocate for the plan that they put together each and every week.”

Kudos to the Bears’ leading receiver for striking a balance between wanting to be that top dawg while also wanting what’s best for the team as a whole.

Of course, everything isn’t hunky dory with Rome Odunze. As is the case with all players who are early in their professional development arc, Odunze has things to work on moving forward. At the top of the list is catching contested passes. Odunze is listed at 6-foot-3 and 214 pounds. He has good size and length, as well as a frame that should allow him to shield defenders and help him secure contested catches. So while he has not been able to do nail down that aspect of his game with consistency yet, the tools are there for him to make it happen.

There is no better time for Rome Odunze to level up than in Week 9 against a Bengals defense that is vulnerable. Not only has it given up chunks of yards and a fair amount of touchdowns, this unit is in disarray as it is coming off of a week that began with a players-only meeting and just saw a third defensive player request a trade out of town. All things considered, it feels like a good week to make something shake if you’re a Bears wide receiver.
