The Greeley Demands Better initiative group did not collect signatures for a petition attempting to force a vote on the zoning for Cascadia, according to the Greeley city clerk.
On Thursday, City Clerk Heidi Leatherwood issued a statement of insufficiency for the petition that sought a special election on whether to revoke zoning for Cascadia, halting a portion of the work. The private mixed-use development is adjacent to the Catalyst entertainment district, which aims to construct a hotel, water park and hockey arena for the Colorado Eagles hockey team in west Greeley.
“Today, another roadblock has been placed in our path — the city rejected thousands of signatures but did not identify which signatures were of concern and why they were rejected,” Greeley Demands Better co-chair and Ward 2 city council candidate Brandon Wark was quoted in an emailed statement. “We will win the battle in our efforts to correct the wrongs and re-establish the veracity of the workings of our local government.”
According to the clerk’s release, 41% of the 7,763 signatures collected were deemed invalid. The clerk reported that 52% of the rejected signatures were due to the person who signed not being a registered voter in Greeley.
“Their very aggressive pay-to-play signature collection effort was a failure,” Catalyst developer and Water Valley CEO Martin Lind said. “It tells you that the masses of the city of Greeley don’t really need this thing to go to a vote. That’s what it’s telling us.”
The valid signatures put the petition just 32 signatures short of the required 4,586 signatures to pass. Greeley Demands Better has until Tuesday to gather the remaining signatures. If they’re valid, the petition will pass.
