Meredith O’Grady, a senior at La Canada High school in La Cañada Flintridge, California, has verbally committed to swim and study at the University of California, Los Angeles, beginning next fall. At the time of her commitment, she wrote on social media:
“UCLA!! I am so happy and excited to continue swimming and studying at UCLA in 2026!! Thank you Coach Jordan and Coach Graham for the opportunity to join this incredible team. I’d especially like to thank my father and Coach, John O’Grady, who has been crucial to my swimming all these years. Thank you to my family, Spartans coaches and teammates for your unwavering support. And thank you to Coach Kristine for your continued encouragement and wise words. I am so excited to swim with my UCLA teammates!! Go Bruins!! ”
O’Grady may be poking the bear by choosing UCLA; her two older brothers swim/swam for cross-town rival USC (Chris in the class of 2025 and Pierce in the class of 2028). Her older sister, Mae, is a senior at Texas and has been the Longhorns’ women’s swim team manager since 2022.
O’Grady swims for her high school and for the club team Spartans of La Canada, where her father, John O’Grady, is the head coach. A sprint free and fly specialist, she logged lifetime bests in all her best events during high school season last spring. At the Rio Hondo League Championships in April, she won the 100 fly (56.70) and was runner-up in the 50 free with 23.78, which took down a long-standing La Canada High School record. The following week, she swam the 100/200 free at the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 Championships, placing 2nd in both events and earning PBs of 50.98/1:48.63. Her 100 free time was a school record, as well. She then went on to compete at the 2025 CIF State Championship in Clovis, where she finished 5th in the 200 free and 16th in the 100 free.
This summer, O’Grady won the 50 free (27.05) and 200 free (2:08.27), was runner-up in the 100 free (58.43), and came in 4th and 7th in the 400 free (4:34.65) and 100 fly (1:06.99), respectively, at the Summer Age Group Championships.

50 free – 23.78 100 free – 50.98 200 free – 1:48.63 100 fly – 56.70O’Grady will join the Bruins’ class of 2030 with “Best of the Rest” recruit Zoie Fjare, and Alex Fox, Ava Otteson, McKenna Carroll, Mia Bugarin, Olivia Sina, and Sora Koike. UCLA finished 7th out of 14 teams at their inaugural Big Ten Conference Championships last fall. It took 22.55/49.60/1:47.11 in the freestyle events and 53.45 in the 100 fly to score points at the meet.
