Abernathy is a backstroke and IM specialist who has improved in all of his best events each year of his high school career.

His target meets of the 2024-25 season were the NC STAR Triad Tropic Invitational in December, the NCHSAA 4A State Championship in February, and the Shamrock Showdown in March. At the Triad Tropic Invite, Abernathy grabbed silver in the 400 IM with a personal-best 4:02.69, cutting 4.20 seconds from his best time, and took bronze in the 200 back at 1:52.62, lowering his PB by 1.74 seconds.

He added a seventh-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.05 and cracked the top eight in two off events, taking fifth in the 200 fly at 1:57.45 and eighth in the 200 free at 1:48.50.

After missing individual qualification for the 2024 NCHSAA State meet, though he helped the 400 free relay take 20th with a 49.67 split, Abernathy returned in 2025 to record a pair of sub-1:55 bests in the 200 IM. He stopped the clock at 1:54.95 in prelims before lowering his time to 1:54.87 for 12th in the ‘B’ final. He also helped two relays, splitting 27.36 on the 22nd-place 200 medley relay and 48.51 on the 400 free relay that finished 17th.

His best showing of the season came at the Shamrock Showdown, where his current best times in both backstroke events were established. He touched the wall sixth in the 200 back in 1:50.24 and 11th in the 100 back in 52.18, and was slightly off his bests in the IMs: 1:55.55 for 12th in the 200 IM and 4:03.53 for ninth in the 400 IM. He went on to swim lifetime bests in off events, going 1:56.07 for 18th in the 200 fly and 4:45.33 for 13th in the 500 free.

This summer, Abernathy qualified for and competed at the NCSA Summer Championships in the long-course pool. He threw down personal bests in the 200 back, finishing 22nd in 2:07.83 and dropping 3.58 seconds; the 400 IM, placing 38th in 4:41.65 with a 5.44-second improvement; and the 200 IM, coming in 40th at 2:12.24, slicing 1.88 seconds off his previous best. He also logged a season-best 2:13.09 in the 200 fly, which earned him 56th.

George Mason, located in Fairfax, Virginia, competes in the Atlantic-10 Conference. This year, the Patriots took third out of eight teams on the men’s side.

Abernathy will be a valuable addition to the team’s roster in all of his main events. His lifetime best in the 400 IM would have ranked second on the team’s 2024–25 depth chart, while his 200 IM would have been fourth. His times in both backstroke events would have situated him in fifth.

Sophomore Ian Rodgers led the way in both backstroke events with times of 47.33 and 1:44.55, while junior Tate Anderson (1:44.29) and sophomore Alex Crown (3:53.09) were the Patriots’ top IMers. Abernathy will overlap one year with both Rodgers and Crown, as the two will be seniors during his freshman campaign.

At the 2025 A-10 conference meet, where ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals are offered, Abernathy’s best time in the 400 IM would have put him 13th after prelims and into the consolation final. It took times of 49.38 (100 back), 1:49.76 (200 back), and 1:51.52 (200 IM) to make the top 16 and score in his other top events.

Abernathy joins Isaac Harter and Jacob Anderson as the only publicized commits in the Patriots’ class of 2030.
