Two individuals were arrested in Deir Ezzor province, eastern Syria, for allegedly circulating counterfeit U.S. dollars, following a well-coordinated operation by local police.
The suspects, identified as A.A. and Y.A., both from rural areas of the province, were apprehended in the al-Aashara region after a thorough investigation by the al-Hashara Police Station, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior.
The two men were found in possession of nearly $5,700 in counterfeit U.S. dollars, along with 9 million Syrian pounds. The counterfeit bills were seized during the arrest.
The suspects admitted to exchanging $800 worth of counterfeit currency at a money exchange office in the city of al-Bukamal. The office owner was contacted, and the fraudulent funds were returned to him.
The suspects have been referred to the judicial authorities, where legal proceedings are underway.
