As it turns out, the Baltimore Ravens aren’t the only team entering Week 8 without some key contributors.
The Chicago Bears just announced that cornerback Kyler Gordon and offensive lineman Braxton Jones are going on injured reserve. Both players hald already been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Ravens. The decision comes after each up on the injury report on Thursday after not having any designation to start the week. Gordon has groin and calf issues, while Jones is dealing with a knee injury.
UPDATE — LAMAR JACKSON WILL NOT PLAY VS. BEARS IN WEEK 8
These are major injuries for the Bears. When it comes to Kyler Gordon, the Bears will be without one of their best defensive starters. Gordon is one of the NFL’s best nickel cornerbacks when healthy. Unfortunately, health and availability have been issues with the talented defender. The next time Gordon plays a full 17-game season will be a first. And while I am still on board with the extension he was handed by the front office this offseason, an injury-plagued 2025 is a reminder why some fans were hesitant to embrace the move.
As for Braxton Jones, losing him strikes a blow to Chicago’s depth in the trenches. Jones began the year as the Bears’ Week 1 starter at left tackle, but was benched in Week 4 against the Raiders and ultimately lost his starting gig coming out of the bye. There were whispers about Jones being a trade candidate ahead of the upcoming NFL Trade Deadline. I imagine those whispers have been silenced now that he is on IR.

In addition to placing Kyler Gordon and Braxton Jones on IR, the Bears also made these moves:
Signed defensive lineman Jonathan Ford to the active roster. Ford, a seventh-round pick (234th overall) by the Green Bay Packers in 2022, made his Bears debut in 2024 and has appeared in seven games over the last two seasons. Elevated tight end Stephen Carlson and defensive back Dallis Flowers from the practice squad to the game day roster. Carlson steps in while tight end Cole Kmet sits out Week 8 with a back injury that came up in the Week 7 win against the Saints and didn’t heal in time for him to be ready for Week 8. This will be Kmet’s first missed game. Flowers joins a secondary that will be without the four cornerbacks who started the year atop the depth chart. Good luck! Defensive end Austin Booker (knee) and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga (knee) have been downgraded to OUT and are still on injured reserve. Both players remain with designated to return tags. The Bears have until Oct. 28 to bring Booker back from IR. As for Ogbongbemiga, he has until Nov. 6 to be activated. The Austin Booker thing has been odd. He has been putting together full practices, which seems like a sign he is ready to suit up and get back on the field. However, the team has yet to activate him from injured reserve. Perhaps the front office is trying to buy time before dropping a player to clear a roster spot. But after pushing two players to IR on Saturday, there is room for Booker. Let’s continue to monitor this situation because it seems odd.
One notable nugget here is that kicker Jake Moody was not flexed from the practice squad this week, which means that Cairo Santos has been given the medical green light to kick on Sunday against the Ravens. It will be his first action since booting multiple 50+ yard field goals in the Bears’ Week 4 win against the Las Vegas Raiders.
