Lineup Options, Baby Burakovsky, Front Office Poll, Frondell, James, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

It’s a Blackhawks game day (after three days off) so let’s revisit the whole idea of the Hawks skating 11 forwards and 7 defensemen. Scott Powers wrote a good piece on the subject at The Athletic in which he writes that new Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill did not intend to go with 11-7 when training camp started, but injuries opened the door to try it and it’s been successful. Entering tonight’s game, the Blackhawks are 3-0-2 in games in which they’ve skated 11-7.

Powers does note that it’s going to get harder to stay with that lineup when Blashill has his full roster healthy. Nick Foligno is back tonight and Jason Dickinson is TBD, but “healthy” scratching three forwards every night isn’t preferable. And Blashill admits the 11-7 isn’t going to be every night and/or permanent. But he likes what it’s done for his group thus far.

“My gut is, more nights than not right now, we’re going to stay with 11 and seven,” Blashill said. “I’m not going to do it every night, but more nights than not. And you’re probably going to do it on the road even more than at home, so I would foresee us doing 11 and seven on Thursday. I really think it puts our D in the best position to be successful. Every team is unique; you could coach a different team and never do it. It just depends on the makeup of your group.”

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) October 22, 2025 Blackhawks forward André Burakovsky was not on the ice with the team at practice in Tampa on Wednesday. His wife shared on Instagram that they welcomed a daughter into their family this week. Congrats to the Burakovsky family!

If you’ve been here for more than a couple months, you know I am a fan of Dominic James’ game and was disappointed he felt there was a better/quicker/more attainable path to the NHL somewhere else. He didn’t sign with the Blackhawks when his career at Minnesota-Duluth came to an end; he waited for his rights to clear and got a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning. And, well, that “better path to the NHL” happened pretty quickly. Originally a sixth-round pick by the Blackhawks in 2022, James was recalled by the Lightning on Wednesday and could face the organization that drafted him tonight in Tampa.

— Tampa Bay Lightning (@TBLightning) October 22, 2025 The Blackhawks did not receive any votes when the guys at The Athletic polled NHL execs asking which NHL team has the best front office. That’s fine. Circle back in a few months/a couple years. Let’s see how the youth movement changes that perspective. Before the comments go crazy: 15 teams didn’t receive a vote. The Los Angeles Kings, who hired Ken Holland as their GM in May, did receive a vote. We’ll see how that works out, too.

— Tre Kronor (@Trekronorse) October 22, 2025 The Kings announced future Hall of Famer Anže Kopitar has been placed on IR with a foot injury. The Blackhawks host the Kings on Sunday, which kinda sucks that fans won’t get a chance to appreciate Kopitar at the United Center. But hey, Corey Perry was activated so fans have someone to give their attention to in Kopitar’s absence… The Nashville Predators assigned forward Brady Martin, the fifth overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, to the Soo Greyhounds in the OHL. The NHL announced changes to the start times of three upcoming Leafs games to accommodate the World Series involving the Blue Jays.
