By pretty much any metric you’d choose, the Chicago Cubs had a top five-ish offense this year in Major League Baseball, even as they suffered through significant dips at times throughout the season.
It’s unsurprising, then, that the Cubs are pretty well represented on the list of National League Silver Slugger finalists this year. From MLB.com:
First base: Pete Alonso, New York Mets; Freddie Freeman, Los Angeles Dodgers; Matt Olson, Atlanta Braves
Second base: Nico Hoerner, Chicago Cubs; Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks; Brice Turang, Milwaukee Brewers
Third base: Matt Chapman, San Francisco Giants; Manny Machado, San Diego Padres; Max Muncy, Los Angeles Dodgers; Austin Riley, Atlanta Braves
Shortstop: Francisco Lindor, New York Mets; Geraldo Perdomo, Arizona Diamondbacks; Trea Turner, Philadelphia Phillies
Outfield: Corbin Carroll, Arizona Diamondbacks; Pete Crow-Armstrong, Chicago Cubs; Juan Soto, New York Mets; Kyle Stowers, Miami Marlins; Kyle Tucker, Chicago Cubs; James Wood, Washington Nationals
Catcher: William Contreras, Milwaukee Brewers; Hunter Goodman, Colorado Rockies; Will Smith, Los Angeles Dodgers
DH: Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers; Kyle Schwarber, Philadelphia Phillies; Christian Yelich, Milwaukee Brewers
Utility: Alec Burleson, St. Louis Cardinals; Jake Cronenworth, San Diego Padres; Brendan Donovan, St. Louis Cardinals
Team: Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers
I think those nods generally track, though I don’t see any winners for the Cubs when you look at the full pool of players/teams against whom they are competing. Still a fine season and fine showing.
There is one HUGE snub, though, with Michael Busch somehow being excluded from the first base group despite being second in wRC+ (by ONE point), second in wOBA (by ONE point), second in homers, and third in RBI. I mean, wtf? How is that not a top-three bat at the position?
Guys like Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly had really strong offensive years, too, but they are pretty clearly outside of the finalist group when you look with clear eyes. Busch, though. What a robbery.
This year’s Silver Slugger winners in the NL will be announced on November 6.
