Cooper is one half of a top-5 EDGE duo in the NFL, with Nik Bonitto on the opposite side of the line from him. But Cooper was arrested twice in one week back in June for domestic violence and then for violating a protective order.
That hurt himself, his team, and most importantly his girlfriend. His charges were elevated to a felony when it was found he choked his then girlfriend which led to “substantial risk of death.”
From ESPN: “In that report, a nurse wrote that the woman experienced a physical injury from being choked that led to a “substantial risk of death” or substantial risk of injury, including the possibility of traumatic brain injury.”
During training camp, he had to go court, which was pushed back but he was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List.
Over the last six week, Cooper’s teammates have been playing without him. And they’ve been playing well. Jonah Elliss and Que Robinson have combined for 3 sacks, 4 tackles for a loss and 6 QB hits in replacement of Cooper.
Meanwhile the defense as a whole just shut down the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in a huge win on Thursday Night Football. It was a great game plan by Sean Payton on offense, and an even better one by Vance Joseph on defense.
Unfortunately, Elliss was injured late in the fourth quarter and may end up on the Injured Reserve.
Besides that, the Broncos haven’t missed Cooper.
Though, a team always wants to have their best players available. And Cooper will undoubtedly give the Broncos a boost next weekend when he suits up against the Arizona Cardinals. Especially if Elliss lands on the IR.

Most people will just cheer and not think about it too much. Not think about the domestic violence charges which led to him missing the first six games of the season.
It will likely look a lot like the reaction to how Rams tackle Alaric Jackson is playing.
Alaric Jackson was arrested for domestic violence this offseason for “what police told ESPN was a charge for ‘a person who willfully inflicts corporal injury’ against a spouse.”
When the case was dismissed, Jackson was allowed to play all season long. Then he randomly threw a punch and hit former Broncos player Bradley Chubb in the face after the Rams-Bills game on Monday Night Football earlier this week.
In Jackson’s case, people are simply not thinking too much about the domestic violence arrest from the offseason because it was diverted and he won’t face a felony charge.
So, when Cooper comes back next Sunday, fans will likely cheer and compartmentalize the arrest, as well as the fact that he hurt the team through the first six weeks by hurting a woman.
Cooper’s court proceedings have been conveniently moved to March 2027, after the current NFL season.
Denver sits at 4-2, in playoff contention, with an easy slate of games facing them in the short term.
Their next game is Sunday Oct. 25 in Arizona against the Cardinals with a 2:05 p.m. MT kickoff.
