ORANGE — A grueling Trinity League schedule against some of the state’s best teams seems to have prepared the Orange Lutheran girls volleyball team for a postseason run.
The Lancers got off to a good start with a sweep of Sunny Hills, 25-15, 25-13, 25-21, in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs on Tuesday at Orange Lutheran High School.
Orange Lutheran (25-10) will play Marina in a second-round match on Thursday at Marina High.
The Vikings defeated Valley Christian in four sets in a first-round match Tuesday.
Orange Lutheran, which came into the match ranked No. 9 in Orange County, relied on its youth throughout the contest.
Freshman outside hitter Addison Underwood led Orange Lutheran with 16 kills, all coming from the left side.
Sienna Cicero, also a freshman, had 11 kills, junior Leily Magnuson served five aces and junior setter Marley Robinson picked up assists on nearly every point.
“That’s the beautiful thing,” Orange Lutheran coach Henry Valiente said. “We have all these young payers that know how to play in these crucial moments.”
No. 10 Sunny Hills (19-7), which finished in a first-place tie with Cypress in the Crestview League, appeared defenseless against Underwood, who had kills into the back row and had cross court kills.
“We run a really fast offense at Orange Lutheran and Marley is able to push it out no matter where the set is or the pass is,” Underwood said. “And so, it was just like a matter for me getting up. Her high sets were perfect tonight.”
Orange Lutheran built double-digit leads in each of the first two sets, cruising to easy victories in both.
Sunny Hills didn’t go down without a fight in the third set.
There were 13 ties, including a 21-21 tie down the stretch, and four lead changes in the set.
Junior outside hitter Olivia Urias had five kills in the set and senior outside hitter Ella Chisum had four kills.
A kill from Urias gave Sunny Hills a 21-20 lead before Orange Lutheran went on 5-0 run to close out the set and the match.
“We knew it was going to be a big match for us,” Sunny Hills coach Amanda Donaldson said. “They are a Trinity League team. We got to play them last year in the championship of a tournament. We lost to them then and we were ready for some revenge tonight. But their offense was pretty fast and we had a little bit of a tough time getting our passes to where we could actually do something with them.”
