A 16-year-old who was recently released from a hospital amid an ongoing cancer battle is seeking her father’s release after he was detained by immigration agents.
Ofelia Torres, who has been battling Stage 4 cancer for nearly a year, says her father was taken into federal custody just days after she was released from a Chicago hospital.
Torres was joined by other community members on Tuesday, calling for her father’s release from custody.
“My dad, like many other fathers, is a hard-working person who wakes up early in the morning and goes to work without complaint,” she said.
Ruben Torres was taken into ICE custody at a Home Depot store in Niles in recent days, according to his attorney.
“Ruben is a Mexican citizen who’s lived in the United States since 2003, worked for the same employer as a painter for 20 years,” attorney Kalman Resnick said.
Kalman said his client is being detained at the federal ICE processing facility in Broadview. Resnick says he will go to federal court aiming to get his client released from detention later this week.
“He has an absolutely impeccable record in the United States, and we believe that we can demonstrate to an immigration judge that he’s entitled to stay in the United States with his family and receive what’s called ‘cancellation of removal,’ which will give him a pathway to lawful permanent residence and eventually citizenship,” he said.
Chicago Ald. Matt Martin is among those calling for Torres’ release.
“This is just nothing short of cruelty, pure, simple, engineered cruelty,” he said. “What’s happening to Ophelia’s family is what’s happening to so many other families across our city and beyond.”
Ophelia said that she hopes that federal agents will treat immigrants like her father with “love and respect” as she called for his release.
“I’m making this video to spread awareness and remind the public that immigrants are humans with families and deserve to be treated with love and respect, just like anyone else,” she said.
