The Chicago Bulls have multiple banged-up players ahead of Wednesday night’s opener.
Coby White and Zach Collins have already been ruled out for the team’s meeting with the Detroit Pistons at the United Center. White missed the entirety of the preseason after suffering a calf strain in August, and the Bulls announced on Monday that he would still need at least two more weeks to regain full health. As for Collins, he suffered a fracture in his wrist during preseason that required surgery. The injury will sideline him for at least the next month.
Now, with only a little over 24 hours to go until the big game, more injury news has trickled out of Bulls practice. K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network shared that both Ayo Dosunmu and Patrick Williams have been dealing with lingering issues. While both practiced with the team on Tuesday, it seems as though their status could remain unclear until closer to game time.
Each sat out the team’s final preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Dosunmu experienced a thumb injury against the Nuggets on Oct. 14 that sidelined him. As for Williams, he was scratched right before tip-off due to hamstring tightness. Johnson now cites his injury as a groin issue.
To be sure, the fact that both were able to practice today feels like a positive sign. But only time will tell how their body responds to that practice, as well as how cautious Billy Donovan wants to be. For what it’s worth, it sure feels the Bulls would need both available against a deep and physical Pistons team. Each played fairly well during the preseason, with Williams even showing some encouraging aggressiveness off the bench.
Dosunmu also happened to be among the Bulls’ best players over their five exhibition games. Any concerns about his shoulder surgery were put to bed as he averaged 15.3 points on 61.5 percent shooting from the field. Especially with White sidelined for these next six games, it feels like Dosunmu’s efficient finishing skills and explosive transition speed could be essential.
Anyway, we’ll update you on their official injury designation when it’s made available. I wouldn’t be stunned if both enter tomorrow as questionable, though. As much as the Bulls might need them, we’re also talking about Game 1 of 82. Keeping guys healthy for the long haul is undoubtedly most important.
