Some people may think their minds are playing tricks on them when they walk into this new Los Angeles area museum that aims to bend reality and challenge perceptions.
“We’re not just a museum, we’re an attraction. We invite you to come and reimagine reality. We combine science, psychology and art and we really challenge your perception of reality and illusions,” said Andy Levey, the chief marketing officer for the Museum of Illusions, which opens its doors in Santa Monica on Friday, Oct. 24.
The new, 12,000-square foot venue is located in Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade and features more than 80 exhibits that include optical illusions, installations, holograms and even a small-scale version of the beachside city.
The new venue is part of a global chain of Museum of Illusions, which has nearly 70 locations in 26 countries including a recently opened spot in San Diego with another venue coming to Sacramento later this year.

“You can experience some crazy cool photo ops and look like you’re hanging upside down,” he said.
There’s also a room that recreates some of Santa Monica’s nearby buildings for an immersive experience that will make visitors feel like Spiderman.
“You can climb up and down the building and it looks like you’re actually climbing on the buildings,” Levey said. “We’re really there to mess with your senses and perceptions.”
Other ways the museum will mess with your senses is a kaleidoscope room where colorful projections will surround visitors and a vortex tunnel where people will feel like they’re spinning through a bridge inside a tunnel.
While the museum is a place where people will want to take pictures to post on their social media, Levey said that there’s also a scientific lesson behind all the illusions.
“All of our exhibits are backed by science and technology. It’s like a magic trick and you want to understand how it happens and most of the exhibits have an explanation saying hey this is why your brain is perceiving it like this, so there is an educational component to it,” he said.
