ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Consumers often find themselves in a battle with big businesses when a product or service fails to meet expectations. So how do you fight a multi-billion-dollar company?
News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry spoke with Danny Karon, a consumer lawyer and professor who wrote ae book called Your Lovable Lawyer’s Guide to Legal Wellness: Fighting Back Against a World That’s Out to Get You. As the name implies, the book is about asserting your rights when a business is in the wrong.
“I’m saying you ought to go in with a healthy dose of skepticism because big business is about making money for big business, not about helping you,” Karon said.
Let’s talk airlines. The Trump administration recently rolled back airline passenger rights so airlines no longer have to compensate you for disrupted or delayed flights.
Deanna Dewberry, News10NBC: “So let’s say I’m sitting on the tarmac for more than three hours and I want to be compensated but they don’t necessarily have to compensate me. So how do I go about making that argument?”
“I would recommend writing the letter certified mail return receipt requested with your travel document making a responsible, respectful plea for what you think you’re owed,” Karon said.
Danny Karon: “And I’ve never not once been turned down.”
Deanna Dewberry: “Really not once? And does that make the difference – writing the letter rather than making the phone call?”
Danny Karon: “Absolutely it does. In my 35 years of consumer law practice, I’ve observed a lot of things but one stands out. It’s that documents that get mailed get paid attention.”
Another issue discussed was renters’ rights. More than 60% of Rochesterians rent.
Deanna Dewberry: “Can you give us some advice on dealing with your landlord?”
“Whenever you rent an apartment or wherever, take videos of the whole place. Make sure that when he comes and says – or she, the landlord says hey you made a mess, you can say you know what, it looked like this. In fact, it looked better when I left than when I started,” Karon advised.
Small consumer protections can save you big money. Sometimes you find that the small print actually works in your favor.
