Bears 24-Hour Rule: Winning Ugly Still Counts ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I’ve done my best to never get too high or too low with this year’s Bears team. Whether it was after the embarrassing Detroit loss or the thrilling Dallas blowout win, I’ve tried to always remember that this is just year one of Ben Johnson’s tenure, and that his process is going to take some time to fully set in and revamp the culture. This is a year-long development plan for Caleb Williams and the rest of this young roster. There’s going to be some really fun moments, and some annoying ones. Luckily, one of the more annoying performances came in a win. Let’s get to it 24 hours later.

Bears 24-Hour Rule

As it does most weeks, I think it makes sense to start with Caleb Williams. I gave him a C-minus in Instant Grades. Honestly, that was probably a little generous. It was far from QB1’s best game. He threw for less than 200 yards, no TDs, and also tossed an interception, though the only reason he threw that INT was because a bogus OPI call was made on tight end Colston Loveland right before it. For me though, the biggest issues was he looked uncomfortable in the pocket. His happy feet returned, and it looked like he lost trust in his pass protection. Unfortunately, I do think that’s just going to be something that happens from time to time as Caleb develops. Its important to remember we’re still very much in the development stage of Caleb Williams’ career. I truly think he has all the tools to be great, but he’s still essentially learning an entirely new way of playing quarterback. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is trying to develop Caleb Williams to be great for a sustained amount of time. Flashes in the pan are fun, but in the NFL you win with quarterbacks who can make all the throws from the pocket. Caleb Williams has the arm talent to make all those throws. Now its about getting everything in rhythym – his eyes, his feet, and his brain along with his arm. Sometimes things might look rough, but that’s becasue Johnson really is just throwing the kitchen sink at him. There’s no easing him into the process. And he’s doing that because he believes Caleb Williams can handle it. The ride is going to have some bumps along the way, but I’m still fully confident that the Bears have their head coach and quarterback combo for the long-term. Ben Johnson and his staff did a great job self-scouting and diagnosing their issues in the bye week. D’Andre Swift has kept running hard, but become more patient and explosive as well. Kyle Monangai has developed into a legit RB2. And the offensive line is so much improved from last year and is starting to come together. The best teams in the NFL can pound the rock when they need to, and it’s nice to see the Bears showing signs of being able to do that. We talked about it on the BN Bears Podcast, too, but I wanted to give an extra shoutout to Colston Loveland for his blocking this week. He’s never going to be the best blocking tight end, but on Sunday he was an incredibly willing participant and on a few plays sprung some nice runs. So much of being a good blocker just comes down to effort. Loveland showed a lot of that on Sunday. It’s kind of wild just how much Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen has transformed this defense. Even at its best under Matt Eberflus, it was a bend-don’t-break unit that just kind of did it’s thing and waited for opponents to make a mistake. Allen’s unit is forcing opponents into those mistakes, and it’s doing so at an incredible rate leading the league in takeaways. There will still be a few rough performances for this unit, especially with a depleted cornerback room, but the intensity and energy they play with is so fun.

— Jacob Infante (@jacobinfante24) October 19, 2025 I think what has helped make this defense that much better the last few weeks has been safety Jaquan Brisker and cornerback Kyler Gordon being healthy. Those two are so valuable to this defense, and they’re perfect fits for what Dennis Allen wants to do, which is cause havoc. They can make plays in the backfield, they can come up and play the run, and they’re also good in coverage. When he has those two players at his disposal, it really helps the rest of the defense fall into place. Drew Dalman and Caleb Williams have to get the snaps figured out. There were the two from under center that were bad, and there was an errant shotgun one as well. Dalman fell on the sword a bit for those bad snaps, but 99% of the time it’s kind of on both parties. I trust they’ll get it figured out, but really you can’t have that problem again on the road next week against a very talented Ravens team that is all of a sudden desperate for a win. Next week’s game should be a fascinating one. Baltimore had the bye week to self-scout, and they’re getting healthier with quarterback Lamar Jackson and linebacker Roquan Smith likely both playing. They’re a much better team than their 1-5 record, and the fact that they’re 6.5-point favorites over the Bears shows that. I’ll be really intrigued to see how the Bears look and how Caleb Williams bounces back from a bad game going up against a very talented opponent.
