Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd Stats: Maguire Stuns Reds to Earn United’s First Anfield League Win in Nine Years ...Middle East

Harry Maguire was decisive late on in a Premier League thriller at Anfield. Re-live a great game with the best facts and Opta data in our Liverpool vs Man Utd stats page.

Liverpool brought all of their siege weapons to the frontline, the promise of goals and a turnaround seemingly building as they threw absolutely everything at Manchester United. But the visitors had their own battering ram to make the difference, as Harry Maguire stunned Anfield to earn a fine 2-1 win for Ruben Amorim’s men.

Sunday’s Premier League encounter was a gruelling watch. It had almost everything as neither side let up but ultimately ended with immense frustration for Arne Slot’s Liverpool and pure elation for United.

Bruno Fernandes said it best in midweek, suggesting United are always either one match from crisis or one match from looking like they could challenge for the title, and this game typified that inconsistency.

Make no mistake, though, this wasn’t easy. It was never going to be after failing to win at Anfield in the league since January 2016. But in earning it, United provided another reminder of the quality they do possess and how effective they can be.

Of course, it cannot be ignored that Liverpool didn’t exactly go into this fixture in great shape; in losing, they suffered three successive league losses for the first time since February 2021 (four).

Expectations for United were low, however. Or at least until about one minute and two seconds into the contest.

Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on Virgil van Dijk’s poor positioning to reach Amad Diallo’s perfectly weighted pass and fired past Giorgi Mamardashvili, almost instantly ensuring Liverpool knew they were in a real dogfight here.

If United opening the scoring was a surprise, the early nature was even more startingly given it was the first goal scored in the opening two minutes of this fixture in the Premier League since October 1995.

Time was still on Liverpool’s side, of course, and they might have been expected to subjugate United thereafter.

But United looked sharp. Their front three of Mason Mount, Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo were mobile, dynamic and inventive, while Amad supported them very ably.

As it happened, Liverpool faced three shots on target in the opening 30 minutes of a league game at Anfield for the first time since April 2024, with United looking just as much of a threat as their hosts.

During that same opening 30 minutes both sides also hit the post. Cody Gakpo was denied a gorgeous goal by the upright before Fernandes spurned a glorious opportunity after more good work from Amad.

The woodwork was struck again before the break as Gakpo’s deflected cross looped down onto the same post as before – only three Premier League games on record (since 2003-04) have seen the post/crossbar hit more often in the first half.

Despite such concerns, United went into the break with their first half-time lead at Anfield in the Premier League since 2014-15. Their advantage did come under threat again early in the second period, though, as Gakpo hit the post for the third time, something only six other players on record have managed in a Premier League game.

Sensing a goal was within reach, Slot threw on more and more attacking talent in attempt to lay siege to the United goal.

It looked to have worked when Federico Chiesa flashed the ball across the face of goal and Gakpo finally got his goal with a 78th-minute tap-in. For many, there was probably only one winner from that point.

But six minutes later, a United corner came back out to Fernandes, whose first-time looped volley cross was headed home by Maguire for the decisive goal.

Gakpo should have equalised as Liverpool piled the pressure on, but United held out for a brilliant win and arguably their finest moment of a largely gloomy spell under Amorim.

This gave the Portuguese coach his first back-to-back league wins in charge of the club nearly a year into his tenure and moved United to within just two points of the champions.

At the end of a week that saw United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe insist Amorim will be in charge for three years, such a momentous victory at Anfield only looks more significant.

But was this the real Man Utd or just another flash of potential that’ll be dimmed by crisis again next week?

Only time will tell.
