With a more tangible plan in place, the Greeley Public Works team is continuing its efforts to gather community feedback for the Poudre River Restoration Initiative.

In 2023, the public works department received funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to improve the Cache la Poudre River north of Greeley. From 1950 to 2019, the length of the Poudre River within Greeley city limits decreased by about two miles.

Since the conclusion of the Poudre River Restoration Initiative’s first phase earlier this year, city staff have been working on developing a master plan that will restore the ecological balance of the Poudre and enhance the lives of residents. To ensure this plan aligns with the needs and wants of residents, city staff want to gather plenty of community feedback and ensure everyone has a chance to contribute to this project.

“We’re looking for all kinds of feedback. We want to know what resonates with the community,” senior urban transportation planner Victoria Leonhardt said. “We want to know what any questions or concerns are, and now that we have a tangible concept for folks to see and react to, now’s the time to get that feedback.”

City staff hosted a community meeting in early August, inviting residents to attend and view the early drafts and designs for a reimagined Poudre River corridor. At the event, most residents indicated that, in addition to the ecological improvements, they were eager to have more riverside activities such as shopping, water sports and other recreational activities, according to Leonhardt.

“We shared the concept publicly in August and so we’ve gotten some feedback through those conversations,” Leonhardt said. “We’ve had pretty consistent feedback throughout the process from our community about wanting more access to nature and more recreation opportunities.”

Though there are not currently any additional plans for further in-person events, city staff has released another survey on Speak Up Greeley, the city’s engagement website. The survey looks to gather more specific requests about the type of activities residents would like and also seeks to determine resident approval of potential designs for the corridor, which feature new walking paths, parks and areas for children.

City staff will review the community responses to refine the plan further and determine if any updates are needed. They plan to present this refined plan to the city council for adoption in early 2026.
