CANYON COUNTRY — “Just reading the [defensive] end and just reading the numbers game.”

That’s what Hart quarterback Jacob Paisano said was the key for him in the running game, and the Hawks’ dual-threat senior was a standout for Hart in their 42-6 road win over Canyon on Friday night.

Paisano – who compiled over 100 rushing yards and three of his five total touchdowns on the ground – first made his mark through the air.

Hart won the coin toss, chose to receive the opening kickoff, and Paisano finished off a 59-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Josh Wagner to get the Hawks on the board first, just over four minutes into the game.

Wagner, a Canyon transfer, scored against his former team and has been a solid depth receiver for Hart in league play. Paisano complemented that depth postgame.

“I’m pretty sure all of our receivers made plays today,” Paisano said. “You know, it feels good being quarterback and knowing you can trust all your guys out there.”

After forcing a Canyon punt, Hart went on a 70-yard drive and ended the series with another touchdown to take a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter, the second score coming when Paisano found a wide open Michael Toner up the left seam.

It was a productive night for the latter as he scored that touchdown on the offensive end and intercepted Canyon quarterback Carson Soria on defense.

“I think Toner’s got about four picks on the year,” Hart head coach Jake Goossen-Brown said about the senior safety postgame. “In the secondary, he’s got natural hands and can track the ball well.”

In the second quarter, Paisano got things truly going for himself in the run game.

After Canyon sliced Hart’s lead to 14-6 when Soria threw a touchdown pass on fourth and goal, Hart earned good field position after a big kickoff return to Canyon’s 47-yard line.

Paisano found the end zone shortly afterward on a 31-yard rushing touchdown on a read option to increase the Hawks’ lead back to 21-6 halfway through the 2nd quarter.

A majority of Hart’s run game on the night came via that option, and with running back Matix Frithsmith joining Paisano in the backfield – the former being one of the more explosive runners in the Santa Clarita Valley, the concept proved to be Canyon’s undoing.

Hart forced another three-and-out on Canyon’s ensuing possession and put together what proved to be a dagger touchdown drive late in the second half.

Facing a 2nd-and-35 in their own territory after multiple penalties, the Hawks were able to get a first down after getting into the open field on a screen.

After that, Hart ran another read option, Paisano faked to Frithsmith and ran alone up the right side for a 31-yard touchdown, a run he punctuated with a somersault into the endzone to give Hart a 28-6 lead heading into halftime.

From there, Canyon had to go away from their running back duo of Keyshawn Wooten and Semaj Richardson because of the deficit, and Soria threw two interceptions in the second half.

Frithsmith joined the touchdown party for Hart, scoring from five yards out with 4:49 left in the third quarter, and Paisano tacked on his fifth total score and third in the run game with a 24-yard scramble late in the period to make it 42-6.

Paisano would not play in the 4th quarter as running back Josh Rogozik took over as a Wildcat quarterback, putting the finishing touches on a dominant Hawks win ahead of their biggest regular-season matchup of the year.

Hart (7-2, 5-0 Foothill League) plays at Valencia (8-1, 5-0) next Friday, Oct. 17, in a battle of the top two teams in the area and a game that will serve as the de facto league title game.

For his part, Goossen-Brown is treating the upcoming game like it’s any other contest.

“They’re a well-coached team,” Goossen-Brown said, “and they have good players, but I think we’re well-coached and we have good players, you know?

“So we’re just trying to go out there and we’re gonna try to get 16 percent better every day and work on finding a way to win and win next week, he said.”

Canyon (1-8, 1-4) heads into their bye week before they close out their season on Fri., October 31, against West Ranch (2-6, 1-3).
