ORANGE — The Corona del Mar football team didn’t need big plays or any razzle-dazzle in its Bravo League game against Villa Park on Friday at El Modena High School.
What the Sea Kings, who are ranked No. 9 in Orange County, did do was put together efficient, sustained drives on their way to a 21-3 victory over the Spartans.
“That was kind of one of our focuses going into the week,” said Sea Kings quarterback Brady Annett, who completed 9 of 15 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score. “So, we took it to them physically and then I didn’t need to do anything special.”
With two league games remaining, the Sea Kings (8-0, 3-0) clinched a playoff berth with the victory, while maintaining their unblemished record.
The Sea Kings can clinch at least a share of first place with one more victory over their final two games.
Villa Park (4-4, 1-2) will try to win its final two games, against San Juan Hills and Newport Harbor, to improve its chances of making the playoffs.
Corona del Mar’s main weapon on offense was Dorsett Stecker, who had four receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown and nine rushes for 39 yards and a touchdown.
Stecker, who had only six rushes for the season coming into the contest, was used as a ballcarrier more than in the previous seven games combined.
“We haven’t used him enough (as a ballcarrier),” Sea Kings coach Kevin Hettig said. “Our other backs are really good so he gives us a whole other dimension back there.”
In the first half, both teams put together long, time-consuming drives.
Corona del Mar had only two first-half possessions but scored touchdowns on both of them.
The Sea Kings started their first drive from the Corona del Mar 4 yard line and drove down 96 yards on 10 plays.
Annett completed passes for 15, 12 and 16 yards on the drive, had a 36-yard run and then an 11-yard touchdown run to give the Sea Kings a 7-0 lead.
The Spartans responded with long drive and got into the red zone but lost yards on second and third down before settling for 38-yard field goal from Dalton Lang.
Stecker’s 6-yard touchdown reception gave the Sea Kings a 14-3 lead at the half.
Corona del Mar received the second-half kickoff and made the score 21-3 on Annett’s 10-yard touchdown run.
“I always knew I could run the ball,” Stecker said. As a freshman, I played running back and in elementary school. I played running back my whole life.”
Villa Park’s best scoring chance in came early in the third when the Spartans had possession on the Corona del Mar 11.
The Spartans got to the 2 but were stopped for no gain on third and fourth down.
“We’re not on point,” Villa Park coach Dusan Ancich told his team after the game. “You’ve got to be on point to win a game like tonight.”
