TORRANCE — For one half, all of the Serra football team’s recent offensive struggles were cured.
But key injuries and a return to the sputtering ways doomed the Cavaliers after halftime.
Serra blew a 17-point lead and failed to score over the final 28 minutes of a 37-27 loss to Chaminade in Mission League play at El Camino College.
The Cavaliers (3-5, 0-3) have lost three consecutive league games for the first time since 2019.
“It’s frustrating. When you’re used to a level of success, it’s hard,” Serra coach Scott Altenberg said. “But you gotta also remember that you’re dealing with young guys and they’re going to make some mistakes.
“The message is you gotta fight. Life’s kind of like this sometimes, you know? We still got two games. It’s going to be a lot about our character, how we come out for those two games.”
Chaminade (4-4, 2-1) scored 27 unanswered points to close the contest.
Serra was without running back/defensive back Devohn Moutra Jr. for the entire second half and also lost wide receiver/defensive back Duvay Williams for most of the half due to injury.
Moutra ran for 79 yards and two touchdowns on offense and forced a turnover on downs with a tackle at the Cavaliers’ 1-yard line in the first half.
Williams, meanwhile, had two catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Serra, which averaged just 5.0 points over its first two league games, scored four touchdowns on its first five possessions to lead 27-10 with 4:13 left in the second quarter.
Cavaliers sophomore quarterback Malik Tunai was particularly dialed in early. He completed 7 of 8 pass attempts for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, including an 80-yard pass to running back Jayshawn Edwards on the game’s opening play.
Chaminade pulled within 27-24 on backup quarterback Jeremy Mellalieu’s 41-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Elijah Williams.
After gaining just 5 yards over three plays, Serra was lined up to punt from its own 25 with more than 6 minutes left in the third quarter. Instead, Tunai attempted to run and was brought down for a loss of 17 yards.
“Just made a mistake,” Altenberg said of the decision. “He should’ve punted, that was not a fake. He acted like a 15-year-old, and that’s what happens.”
Three plays later, Chaminade running back Ronnell Hewitt ran for his second of three touchdowns. The 4-yard score gave the Eagles their first lead, 30-27, with 4:46 left in the third.

Tunai then split the next drive with senior quarterback Nicolas Johnson. Neither were effective, and Tunai was hesitant to throw the rest of the contest.
Tunai completed just 3 of 7 passes for 29 yards in the second half.
Chaminade busted the game open with Hewitt’s final touchdown, a 51-yard run that pushed the advantage to 37-27 with 9:48 left in the fourth.
“Our running game, we leaned on them a lot this season,” Eagles coach David Machuca said. “Ronnell Hewitt made a lot of big plays when needed, especially when we went for it three or four times on fourth down.”
Mellalieu, meanwhile, played most of the game in place of starter Cameron Pooley. Both quarterbacks shared Chaminade’s second possession.
Machuca decided to ride with the hot hand after Mellalieu threw a 50-yard pass at the end of the opening quarter to set up the first touchdown drive.
“He’s been practicing really well,” Machuca said. “We went down, we scored, and that’s how the night went. We kept him in.”
Chaminade is in the midst of a bounce-back season after starting 0-3 in league play last year.
