TUSTIN — Tustin didn’t waste any time throwing its weight around on Friday night.
The Tillers scored early, often and in a variety of ways in the first half against visiting El Modena, paving the way for a one-sided 51-7 victory in the Delta League matchup.
Tustin’s first-string defense was just as overwhelming, holding the Vanguards to negative-16 yards in the first half while the offense built a 48-0 lead.
Both sides agreed to a running clock the entire second half.
“It’s probably the most complete win we’ve had in my tenure as a head coach,” said Anthony Lopez, who’s in his seventh season at the helm at Tustin. “Offense, defense, special teams. Everybody that touched the ball did a good job.”
Tustin (7-1, 3-0) scored on the opening drive of the game against the Vanguards (4-4, 2-1), as sophomore quarterback Ayden Edwards hit junior wide receiver Jeremiah Salvant on a slant and he outraced the defense for a 49-yard touchdown.
Edwards completed 13 of 16 passes for 243 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half.
The Tillers made it 14-0 when Edwards threw a lateral screen pass to two-way lineman Jon Ioane and the 6-foot-4, 290-pound junior lobbed a 23-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Carson Jenkins.
“We make sure to keep the defense on their toes a little bit,” Ioane said. “I think that’s what makes us different in that we’ve got guys that can do it on both sides.”
Tustin quickly got the ball back on an interception by linebacker Tim Ioane, giving the Tillers possession at the El Modena 7-yard line.
Two plays later, 6-foot-2, 303-pound defensive lineman Jeremiah Williams lined up in the Wildcat formation, took the snap and ran into the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead.
Lopez said the play was designed for Williams to pass to Edwards, who was wide open in the end zone, but Williams faced little resistance on his team-leading fifth rushing touchdown of the season.
Tustin stretched the lead to 28-0 late in the first quarter on a spectacular one-handed catch by Hayden Koo as he dragged his feet inbounds in the endzone, resulting in a 25-yard touchdown.
Lopez said he was happy to see the entire team celebrating every touchdown, the type of emotion the Tillers lacked in a 42-14 win against Trabuco Hills last week.
Lopez said the coaching staff spent last week reminding the Tillers of their team-first concepts.
“It’s just us hammering home that it’s not about any individual,” Lopez said. “It’s about the success of the team and praising each other’s success.”
Edwards then found his third different receiver for a touchdown when he hit Rufai Azeez on a 12-yard strike to make it 35-0 with 8:38 left in the half.
Salvant tacked on another 12-yard touchdown reception before Tustin began to mix in their second string before halftime. Devon Benavente took advantage, breaking loose on a 69-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 49-0 with 46 seconds left in the half.
“They had a great week of practice, and it really showed tonight,” Lopez said.
