ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Many local Latino business owners voiced their fears and concerns about workplace safety during a roundtable discussion Friday. The discussion focused on the impact of immigration policies, rising housing costs, and the overall cost of living on the Latino workforce.
Unidos US reported that Latinos are expected to make up about 80 percent of all new workers by 2030 and a third of all working-age Americans by 2050.
Angelica Perez-Delgado, president of Ibero-American Action League, shared insights from the roundtable.
“It was pretty emotional to hear some of the stories of our families and the level of exhaustion that they’re experiencing and the fear and anxiety that they’re living with,” Perez-Delgado said.
Dorcas Roman, owner of Dorcas Construction, expressed her concerns about ICE raids affecting her business and employees. Roman moved to the U.S. from Puerto Rico when she was 10 years old and started her business five years ago.
“I do because at the end of the day these are people working and a lot of them work in the construction field. You know, so I fear for me, I fear for them because I’m working here as much as they are– hard, for what we need financially…stability, bills,” Roman said.
Roman emphasized the impact on local businesses if workers are taken away.
“It’s a worry because. So if I’m choosing that person to work with me, this means my business is going to grow. This means that this person is going to get a job. So now I have to live in fear that they might be taken away. So productivity goes down within my business, but then they lose a, a life here that they want to build,” Roman said.
Roman gathers clients through social media and word of mouth. She works from home on financial tasks and visits construction sites, outsourcing work when necessary.
“I need people like them to come work for me so we could grow together. And if you take people like that that are willing to work for sometimes…change. Why, why remove them? They’re not the problem,” Roman said.
Roman mentioned that learning English was one of the hardest parts of transitioning to life in the U.S. She accomplished that, completed college, and started her own business. She hopes to expand her business and open a brick-and-mortar store in the city.
Unidos US has hosted seven roundtables across the U.S. this year and plans to organize more in the future.
