There is a lot to cover from this meet because the Wolfpack swam fast in their victory over Georgia Tech. Tyler Driscoll started the meet out with a 21.59 split on the women’s 200 freestyle relay, which is faster than the 21.70 she swam at last season’s ACC Championships.
Erika Pelaez swam 1:50.83 in the 200 backstroke to win and set the 2nd fastest time in the country this season, only behind Miranda Grana‘s 1:49.85 from the USC Invite.
Leah Shackley followed her performance with another 2nd fastest time, swimming 51.37 in the women’s 100 fly, which is behind just Claire Curzan‘s 50.06.
The men’s 100 fly went to Aiden Hayes in 45.20, which would have been 2nd in the country, but Luca Urlando went faster this morning, moving him to 3rd.
Wolfpack freshman Eneli Jefimova is making her presence known with a massive 57.67 in the 100 breaststroke, to also take the 2nd fastest time in the country this season behind Anita Bottazzo. This is a good sign for the NC State team that didn’t have anyone under 59 seconds last season.
The Wolfpack had a few other swims that rank in the top 10 in the country so far this season. Max Carlsen swam 4:15.74 in the men’s 500 free to rank 7th, Olivia Nel was 22.00 in the 50 free for 5th, and Lisa Nystrand swam 1:58.11 in the women’s 200 IM for 8th.
Georgia Tech had a few event wins with Joao Caballero winning the 100 breast in 53.34, Giovanna Reis winning the women’s 200 free in 1:45.20, and Lili Gyurinovics taking the women’s 500 free in 4:50.69.
Florida State vs Army West Point Meet Highlights
The Florida State team came out on top of the combined team scores with 547 points to Army West Point’s 231, with a lot of their points coming from depth rather than straight event wins. While the event wins were more split between the teams, the Seminoles took two of the top three in most of the individual events.
Army’s Jonny Crush won the 200 backstroke in 1:42.64, which is only two tenths slower than the 1:42.48 he swam at last year’s Patriot League Championships.
Angie McKane won the women’s 100 fly for the Army team, swimming 52.10 to move up to 8th in the country (when factoring in Shackley’s swim from earlier in the day).
FSU was led by Michel Arkhangelskiy, who swam 45.82 in the men’s 100 fly for the win. Today has been a big day for the men’s 100 fly leaderboard, so while the time would have been 5th in the country coming in to the session, it will be 7th once Urlando and Hayes’s times are added.
Finally, Maryn McDade won the women’s 50 free for Florida State in a new best time of 22.33, dropping from the 22.57 she swam at the ACC Championships.
