Yi Zheng, who swims for Carmel High School and Carmel Swim Club in Indiana, has announced his verbal commitment to Stanford University for the 2027-28 school year. He wrote on social media:
“I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Stanford University! I would like to thank God, my family, and friends for their endless support throughout this journey. I am also very grateful to Coach Plumb and Pfaff, as well as all the other coaches who have coached me in the past, for helping me grow into the swimmer I am today. Finally, a huge thank you to Coach Dan and Coach Mike for giving me this incredible opportunity. GO CARD!! ”
Zheng is a breast/fly/IM specialist whom we ranked the #19 recruit on our Way Too Early list of top boys’ swimmers in the high school class of 2027.
He had a breakout meet at Winter Juniors East, dropping 3.5 seconds in the 100 breast (55.08), 2.5 in the 200 breast (1:58.54), 2.8 in the 200 fly (1:48.71), 1.2 in the 200 IM (1:49.17), and 2.2 in the 400 IM (3:51.22). He finaled in the 200 breast (11th) and 400 IM (15th).
As a sophomore at the IHSAA Boys’ State Championships, he contributed to Carmel’s team victory with a 2nd-place finish in the IM (1:47.64) and a 4th in the breast (55.59). He also split a 25.09 50 breast on the medley relay and a 20.35 50 free on the 200 free relay.
Zheng kicked off long-course season at Indy Sectionals, where he clocked PBs in everything he swam: 50 free (24.58), 100 free (54.26), 400 free (4:04.53), 100 breast (1:04.24), 200 breast (2:15.47), 200 IM (2:03.23), and 400 IM (4:22.21). Zheng was on fire in Indy; he won the 400 IM and placed 2nd in the 200 IM, 3rd in the 200 breast, 6th in the 100 breast, and 11th in the 400 free.
At U.S. Nationals in June, he improved his 200 IM (2:03.07) and 400 IM (4:20.55) times and earned a spot on the U.S. team for the 2025 World Aquatics Junior Championships thanks to his ‘B’ final performance in the 400 IM.
Zheng had another big meet at Summer Juniors, putting up PBs in the 200 back (2:06.18, -.4 seconds), 100 breast (1:04.02, -.2), 200 fly (2:00.68, -1.8), 200 IM (2:01.35, -1.7), and 400 IM (4:18.55, -2). He won the junior national title in the 200 IM and was runner-up in the 400 IM. He also placed 8th in the 200 breast and 10th in the 200 fly.
He ended the long-course season in Otopeni, Romania, where he dropped more time in the 400 IM (4:17.20) and wound up finishing 4th in the ‘A’ final.
