The Chicago Bulls have one more game left before the results start to matter!

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) October 16, 2025 Obviously, it’s hard to know how much we should read into preseason stats. Whether it be resting key guys or restricting their minutes, it’s not necessarily a strong indicator of what a team’s win-loss column will look like in the coming weeks. With that said, the Minnesota Timberwolves have held the third-highest net rating in the preseason thus far. They have been among the most efficient scoring teams and have dropped upwards of 120 points a night over their first four games. Meanwhile, opponents have scored a mere 106 points per game against their defense. Now, those numbers are undoubtedly inflated because of a matchup with Guangzhou Loong-Lions, but they still dropped 126+ points in two of their previous three preseason games. The Chicago Bulls have yet to meet that threshold. While it’s not uncommon for teams to rest some of their top talent in the final preseason contest, the Timberwolves sat a handful of guys for their meeting with the Lions. This should set the Chicago Bulls up for a good look at their starting lineup, which feels like a needed final test for this young group. Their defense has largely failed to show progress despite the offseason emphasis. Has their psychality ramped up? Sure, but this has led to A LOT of fouling and 120+ points per game from their opponent. If they want to build any sort of momentum on that end of the floor heading into opening night, a final strong showing against this deep and explosive Timberwolves team would be a good start. Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves celebrates as he faces the Chicago Bulls – © Nick Wosika-Imagn Images ESPN’s Tim Bontemps ranked the top trios from every NBA team, and I have a feeling you can guess where the Chicago Bulls ended up. Bontemps threw the teams into different tiers, with Chicago joining three teams in the third-to-last section. The Bulls ended up with the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, and Miami Heat in the “Stuck in the Middle” category – aka Tier 8. For what it’s worth, he went with Matas Buzelis, Noa Essengue, and Josh Giddey as the franchise’s Top 3 players. I found this a bit odd considering Coby White is the closest thing the Bulls have to an All-Star, but Bontemps stated that his expiring contract excludes him from being considered a “core” player. Anyway, as much as I’d like to disagree with the outspoken Bontemps, I can not. I may be relatively higher than most on all three of those players – especially Buzelis and Essengue – but the proof is always in the pudding. If the Chicago Bulls want to be considered anything more than a mediocre mess, they have to stop being a mediocre mess! Simple as that. Continue to show signs of legitimate player development and prove that this new foundation can turn you into a real playoff threat as opposed to a Play-In staple. Until you do that, this is how the remainder of the league will see you. Ah, the sweet vibrations of Shams Charania notifications. The NBA has sure felt back in full swing this week as ESPN’s lead insider continues to break some big news. First things first, he shared that the Lakers’ LeBron James will take a very patient approach with his return from scatica. Los Angeles is currently targeting mid-November as a potential return timeline, meaning they could go the first month without their veteran superstar. Charania also shared that longtime role player Malcolm Brogdon will officially retire from the league after signing a deal this summer with the Knicks. A former ROY and Sixth Man of the Year winner, Brogdon has been plagued by injuries throughout the majority of his career. Brogdon is only 32 years old. Bummer. Lastly, news broke on Wednesday night that the Kings have reached a five-year, $140 million extension with former lottery pick Keegan Murray. The forward was on the brink of entering the 2025-26 campaign as a restricted free agent. With the Kings questionably adding a slew of veterans over the last year-plus, the new front office goes out of its way to lock in their best young asset. It makes sense … but it also comes at a steep price. While I’ve long been a Keegan Murray fan, I think this is yet another contract that makes the Josh Giddey deal look more than palatable. Murray took a step backwards last season after a strong Year 2, and he is also two years older than the Chicago Bulls’ jumbo guard. Again, I understand why the Kings did this, and I think Murray’s skill set is extremely valuable in today’s NBA. But he is now in line to make comfortably more than Giddey from 2026-27 and beyond. I’m not so sure that will feel right. If you haven’t been watching the Chicago Bulls’ preseason, you’ve missed a great Ayo Dosunmu return. He is ready to get PAIDDDD!
