The Detroit Pistons shared some unfortunate news about Jaden Ivey on Thursday.
After appearing in only one preseason game, the organization shared that Ivey underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee. The guard had been experiencing discomfort and will now have to be re-evaluated in four weeks.
Ivey is coming off a 2024-25 season where he appeared in only 30 games due to a broken fibula. Detroit shared in their press release that the recent knee pain is “unrelated” to last year’s injury.

While the Detroit Pistons were already taking things slow with Jaden Ivey, the expectation seemed to be that he would return to the floor for the start of the 2025-26 season. His return felt significant for a team that was fresh off its most successful season in nearly a decade. Detroit’s 44 wins were the most since the 2015-16 campaign, while their six-game first-round series against the Knicks marked the furthest they had gone in the postseason since 2007-08.
Before going down with an injury, Ivey looked a lot more comfortable to start his third season in the NBA. He averaged career-highs across the board, boosting his three-point percentage to 40.1 percent on over 5.0 attempts a night. Questions regarding his fit alongside Cade Cunningham started to disappear, as the Pistons looked primed for a breakout.
To their credit, they still managed to put together a strong season with Ivey on the sideline, which is why their expectation to start the year will not change much. At the same time, they have clearly been holding out hope that Ivey could be a part of helping them take the next step. Immediately running into more injury trouble will put that on pause for now.
The Pistons are set to tip off their season on the road next week in Chicago. While they will likely head into that game as the favorite regardless of Ivey’s injury, there is no question that his absence gives the Bulls one less explosive player to worry about. Especially for a team that looks like they could struggle mightily at protecting the paint, removing Ivey’s downhill athleticism could be a big help on Oct. 22.
