It was something I kept tabbed while the Cubs were still in the postseason, but now that their season is over, I guess it’s reasonable to share an end-of-season prospect rankings update from FanGraphs.
Three Cubs prospects make the cut, though it’s possible they aren’t the ones you’re expecting:
44. Kevin Alcantara, OF55. Jefferson Rojas, SS66. Jaxon Wiggins, RHP
Immediately you’re wondering about some big names, but remember that Cade Horton and Matt Shaw both graduated this year. Moises Ballesteros and Owen Caissie, however, appear to have been left off by choice – in an earlier ranking this year, each was outside the top-100, so I’m guessing they simply stayed there. Feels like a miss to me, but I’m obviously biased.
Having just three prospects in any top-100 list, especially where the highest is barely inside the top-50, is not tremendous praise for a farm system. We know that the Cubs’ system has taken a hit the last year, and will require some big breakouts in the first half next year to climb solidly back into the top-half of systems (with more guys showing up on lists like this).
