The San Diego Football Club is still alive for the top seed in the Western Conference as they prepare for the final game in their inaugural season.
The team clinched a playoff spot in August, becoming the fastest expansion team to secure a postseason birth. SDFC now has 60 points in 33 matches – putting them one point ahead of the Los Angeles FC for second place and three behind the first-place Vancouver Whitecaps headed into the final weekend of the regular season.
“I hope that people who watch us play feel that the boys have exceeded expectations because it’s a team that fights every single second of the game,” said San Diego FC head coach Mikey Varas.
SDFC’s final regular season game is this Saturday against the Portland Timbers at Providence Park at 6 p.m.

(Photo courtesy David Frerker/Times of San Diego)SDFC is in the running for the top spot because it has one more victory than the Whitecaps, since regular season wins is the top tiebreaker for seeding.
“We want to be the highest seed because home playoff games are a different animal,” said Sal Zizzo, co-host of the official SDFC podcast, whose standout playing career included stints with several MLS teams, including Chivas USA, and time with the United States men’s national team. He earned the nickname “El Macizo” from the fan base during his two years with San Diego Loyal for his passionate and intense style of play as a defender.
SDFC finished 7-5-5 at Snapdragon Stadium, but put up a league-best 11-1-4 on the road. With a victory over Portland on Saturday, San Diego FC they would sets the all-time record for most road victories in a season after already setting the record for an expansion team.
“I think SDFC has played well at home this year, it’s just a matter of finishing their chances,” Zizzo said.

(Photo courtesy David Frerker/Times of San Diego)To finish as the top-seed in the western conference, SDFC needs to defeat Portland and hope FC Dallas beats Vancouver.
FC Dallas is currently in eighth place, just one point ahead of Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids, for the final playoff spot – giving them their own motivation to take out Vancouver.
“I think we do a good job for setting conditions for talent to thrive,” Varas said. “Nothing is just a given. It’s an honor to play and you have to earn it every week in training.”
Even if it misses out on the top seed, SDFC secures a remaining spot in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup with a win or draw Saturday.
Here are the other possibilities for SDFC with regards playoff seeding:
Win over Portland + a draw or a win for the Whitecaps gives San Diego FC second place. A draw against Portland + a win for LAFC over Colorado gives San Diego FC third place. A loss against Portland + a draw or win for LAFC over Colorado gives San Diego FC third place. A loss against Portland + a draw or a win for LAFC + a win for Minnesota United over the LA Galaxy gives San Diego FC fourth place.San Diego FC and Portland played to a scoreless draw on August 23 at Snapdragon Stadium.
