Prince Andrew’s conduct is a stain on the Royals – and it’s spreading ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

It is one of the most pressing problems facing the King today. And it needs addressing urgently. Something has to be done about Prince Andrew.

The poison continues to seep out from the Prince’s association with that vile creature, now dead, Jeffrey Epstein. It cannot be allowed to contaminate the monarchy any further.

Royal history is scattered with scandals, but in modern times, none has proved as toxic and sickening as this.

Edward VIII rocked the institution to its roots by abdicating. Prince Harry fled The Firm and his country, hurling a salvo of grenades at his family and the Palace. But both men did so for the love of the women they adored.

This scandal – which arguably should see Andrew sent into exile himself – is quite different. It is simply disgusting.

And after more than 20 years of rumours swirling about the Duke’s friendship with a seedy billionaire who surrounded himself with young girls, and as we now know, trafficked them as sex slaves, the time has come to cut Andrew loose.

True, he has not been charged with anything and has consistently denied all the accusations.

Andrew paid a sum reported to be in the region of £12m to a woman he says he never met. That woman, Virginia Giuffre, tragically took her own life in April of this year. But now, in a posthumous memoir, she claims that the Duke of York acted as if having sex with her when she was 17 was his “birthright”.

Disturbingly, Ms Giuffre also alleges that Andrew mentioned his daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, when trying to guess her age. They, he reportedly said, were a little bit younger than Virginia. If her account is accurate, it is repulsive.

The young women at the centre of this horror story – Epstein’s victims – must always remain the most important focus. But the toxicity of this convicted paedophile and his friendship with Andrew is now tarnishing the reputation of the monarchy and detracting from the good work that the King and his family do.

If Charles finds it hard to punish his younger brother, then it must fall to William to take a tougher line. I suspect there is little love lost between the Prince of Wales and his uncle, and I don’t think he should wait until he is King to take action. He needs to exert pressure now.

There has been talk of banning Andrew from using the Royal Estates for shooting parties. And that is certainly one option. But it would be little more than a token gesture, with no impact in the public arena.

Two harder-hitting, and more obvious, sanctions are available. One would be to remove the Duke of York from the elite list of members of the Order of the Garter. He’s already banned from taking part in the annual procession (after William lobbied the late Queen to stop him), but it would be perfectly possible to strip him of the honour entirely.

Another very obvious sanction – and one which I believe is now a necessity – is to remove Andrew from the list of Counsellors of State. These are nominated senior members of the Royal family who can deputise for the monarch if necessary. It strikes me as utterly untenable that the Duke of York could ever step in for the King, given his disgrace and the public contempt in which he is held. Surely his name should now be struck off the list?

But there is one last, and probably highly unlikely, scenario. If Prince Andrew really does consider himself to have “a tendency to be too honourable”, as he asserted in his disastrous Newsnight interview, then why doesn’t he do the decent thing? He could voluntarily give up his remaining honours and constitutional position, remove himself from public view, and try somehow to make amends to the women so appallingly violated by his friend, Jeffrey Epstein.
