Tuscaloosa bars, restaurants offer nightly trivia ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Tuscaloosa bars and restaurants offer several different trivia events nearly every night of the week. Tuscaloosa’s trivia circuit has ultimately become a feat of community, as University of Alabama students and Tuscaloosa locals gather nightly to put their trivia knowledge to the test.

Heat Pizza Bar

The pizza restaurant hosts its weekly trivia at 7 p.m. on Monday nights.

Chad Haynie, the trivia announcer, said that the restaurant usually has around 10 teams, totaling around 50 players.

“I started out attending with a group of friends, and one night thought, I thought I’d be good at this,” Haynie said. “I applied and have been doing it for years since.”

Questions ranged from the beginner to intermediate level. Categories included classics, such as sports and television, as well as experimental categories like politics with jazz and “Futurama.”

No prize was given out at the end of the night, making bragging rights the true award at Heat.

Mellow Mushroom

The downtown pizza spot hosts trivia on Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m., seeing a small but consistent crowd, typically three to four teams.

The trivia was beginner to intermediate, making Mellow Mushroom a great spot for a more relaxed night of trivia.

The restaurant’s prize selection is what truly sets it apart. The teams that finish first through third place receive $30 in “Mellowbucks,” which do not expire and can be redeemed as cash for items at the restaurant. Less traditional prizes, like lava lamps, were also handed out to runners up.

Crimson Taphouse

The bar and grill hosts trivia Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. With nearly the entire crowd participating, there were around eight teams. Questions were intermediate in difficulty, with categories like the 2010s, politics, history and celebrities.

“The questions are typically general knowledge questions that a well-rounded group should be able to answer. That said, there are definitely ones that require more specialized knowledge interspersed throughout,” said Graham Welch, a junior majoring in business.

At the end of the night, Crimson Taphouse awarded prizes to the first through third place teams, with the winners receiving a $100 giftcard for any inhouse beer, second place receiving $50 in beer credit and third place receiving $25 in beer credit.

Druid City Brewing

Druid City Brewing hosts its weekly trivia at 8 p.m. on Friday nights.

Druid City trivia draws a more mature crowd, with most participants being non-college-aged adults, and the trivia difficulty was moderate to advanced. Questions were often intricate and covered topics like music, film, science and geography.

“The trivia can be pretty hard and I’d say it’s targeted toward an older demographic. There are often obscure questions about TV shows and media from the seventies that players under 40 usually don’t know,” said Katie Farquhar, a sophomore majoring in classical civilization and anthropology.

Black Warrior Brewing

The brewing company hosts standard trivia Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and “Music Match” on Thursday nights at 7 p.m.

Players listen to segments of songs played by the host, write down the title or artist of the song on answer slips and turn them in for a chance to win points.

While known for their Tuesday night trivia, they still see a great turnout for “Music Match,” with around 10 teams playing.
