Joel Klatt has watched as much college football as anybody in the country has, and has seen many of the top players in person. During an episode of ‘The Joel Klatt Show’, he handed out his midseason awards to the top players in the country.
The most popular award in college football is the Heisman Trophy. Klatt listed that his five candidates were Ty Simpson, Fernando Mendoza, Jeremiah Smith, Haynes King and Carson Beck. In the end, he believes it is Mendoza because of the level he has taken Indiana to.

“My midseason winner for the Heisman Trophy right now is Fernando Mendoza,” Klatt said. “He has led Indiana to now a Top-5 ranking and this is Indiana folks. They’re top 3 in the country in touchdowns. He has taken what was a very good offense a year ago and taken it to another level. He has been the catalyst. He makes such good throws and he has orchestrated what I think is the best win of the season at Oregon.”
On the season, Mendoza has thrown for 1,403 yards, 17 touchdowns and two interceptions. In the win at Oregon, he was 20-of-31 for 215 yards and one touchdown. In the second half he threw a pick-6 that tied the game at 20, but he responded and went right back down the field to take the lead.
The Hoosiers sent a message to all of college football with that win, and if Mendoza keeps playing at this level, then he will be right there in the race for the Heisman.
