BCCI faces major revenue drop as INR 6,600 crore IPL valuation wiped out ...Middle East

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been the fastest-growing sports league in the world since its inception. But for the first time, its growth has seen a decline. When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) started the league in 2008, it was valued at INR 19,500 crore; that number has reached a whopping INR 76,100 crore. But it turns out this is a significant drop.

Drop in IPL’s ecosystem value

According to a report by D&P Advisory released on October 15, the IPL’s ecosystem value decreased by nearly 8%, dropping from IPL 2024 to IPL 2025. But looking at the broader picture, one finds out that IPL peaked in 2023. If we account for that, the ecosystem value has dropped by a massive 17.73%.

The report, titled Beyond 22 Yards – ‘The Power of Platforms, The Price of Regulation’ – states that the two major factors behind the decline are the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 and the JioCinema-Disney+ Hotstar merger.

Due to the Online Gaming Bill, the IPL ecosystem suffered a loss of about INR 1,500 to 2,000 crore in annual ad and sponsorship revenue. The Jio-Disney merger saw a decrease in competition for broadcast and streaming rights auctions. Combined, these led to an INR 16,400 crore decrease in ecosystem value over two years.

The report does state that Netflix, Amazon, and Apple will come to the floor for the streaming rights in the future since the digital audiences surpassed the television audience for the first time in IPL history last edition. But the fantasy money can’t be replaced.

BCCI to lose revenue?

BCCI’s rising operating revenue can be directly linked to the IPL’s growth. In the 2008 financial year, BCCI recorded INR 1,000.40 crore in operating revenue. This increased to a record INR 9,742 crore for the 2024 financial year.

But this loss of INR 6,600 crore in IPL ecosystem value from last year could affect them. Of this INR 9,742 crore, 5,741 crore came just from the IPL. This number will most likely decrease, and so will BCCI’s revenue.
