A secluded Joshua Tree retreat, designed for off-grid living, is on the market for $14.995 million.
The self-sustaining residence known as “The Saturn Haus” spans 4,240 square feet with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Set on 160 acres of desert, the modern design features four distinct structures of concrete, steel and glass connected by open-air corridors.
Records show the owner, writer Wendy Wacker, bought the property in December 2012 for $85,000 and oversaw the home’s construction.
For the design, Wacker, 64, collaborated with architect Bill Bickford, founding partner of the Chicago-based design firm Northworks. The pair met during the 150th anniversary of the refurbished chapel and grounds of Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, where Wacker’s great-grandfather, Charles H. Wacker, the chairman of the Chicago Plan Commission, is buried. He played a key role in modernizing the Windy City in the early 20th century.
Completed in 2017, Saturn Haus stands out as a modern house that harmonizes with its surroundings.
“We wanted the desert to take the lead, to have the house … feel as though it came down from Heaven to be placed gently on the desert floor, and thanks to the expertise of the Northworks team, we achieved that,” Wacker said.
Every space offers unobstructed views of the stark landscape and distant mountains.
The 2,110-square-foot primary living quarters features open-plan living, high ceilings and radiant heated floors, with glass walls that open for seamless indoor-outdoor living. Other highlights include a fireplace in the great room, an open eat-in kitchen and a spa-inspired bathroom in the primary suite.
In addition, the property includes a 1,280-square-foot guest casita with bunk beds, a 620-square-foot music listening room and a 230-square-foot art studio.
The house generates energy through a solar array and wind turbine, while a thermal array heats and maintains a consistent temperature for the 75-foot lap pool with an attached spa.
Other highlights include an outdoor barbecue center, dining patio and a rooftop viewing deck.
The house is completely off-grid with no backup standard electricity.
