ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Americans are planning to spend a record amount on Halloween this year, but just because we’re spending more does not mean we’re buying more. The prices of many Halloween favorites are downright scary.
It wouldn’t be All Hallow’s Eve without those pop-up costume stores we see every fall, like Spirit Halloween. That’s where News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry found Brady, Shaylee and Leah who trick or treat together every year.
Last year, Brady was a jailbird with shackles and handcuffs, Shaylee spent $50 on a SWAT costume, and Leah was a cop. This year, they want three costumes that have a common theme with a budget of $40-50 max per costume.
According to the National Retail Federation, 73% of Americans plan to celebrate Halloween by spending.
Katherine Cullen, NRF Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights: “Total Halloween spending is going to be $13.1 billion this year. $1.5 billion more than last year and exceeding 2022’s record of $12.2 billion.”
Americans are expected to spend $3.9 billion on candy (up 11% over last year), $4.3 billion on costumes (up 13%) and $4.2 billion on decorations (up 11%). That averages out to about $114.45 per person, $11 more than last year. But while we’re spending more, we’re not necessarily getting more due to tariffs driving up costume costs and candy prices being 8% higher.
Deanna Dewberry, News10NBC: “Did you not find anything you wanted?”
Brady: “No, everything was like $60 to $70 and that’s a lot.”
Deanna Dewberry: “So everything was more expensive than it was last year?”
Brady: “Oh yeah. 100 percent.”
Deanna Dewberry: “So does this put a dent in your Halloween joy – I gotta know.”
Brady: “Yes. Without a doubt.”
All three hope they’ll find something a bit cheaper online.
Here’s Deanna’s do list for stretching your Halloween buck:
Buy your candy in bulk from a warehouse store like BJ’s or Costco. Anything left over can go in Christmas stockings. For your costume, this is the year for DIY. If that’s not your thing, check resale shops like Once Upon A Child for your kiddo. Consider renting your own costume. Stock up on next year’s decorations after Halloween when they’re on deep discount.AI assisted with the formatting of this story. Click here to see how WHEC News 10 uses AI
