For two consecutive games now, the Chicago Bears have found a way to win a football game that they absolutely would have lost under past regimes. The weather was crappy, the Commanders were getting all of the calls, Caleb Williams wasn’t his sharpest, and a new kicker was in the lineup. Despite the adversity, Ben Johnson’s football team battled and won a game. Last year’s team never did that. Matt Nagy’s teams rarely did, either, after 2018. Huge win, time to go on a run!

I don’t know where to start with this one because we have so many noteworthy items, so I’ll start with the quarterback. It wasn’t Caleb Williams’ best game, and I’m sure there are a few throws he wants back, but yet again, when put in a situation where he needed to lead his team down the field to win a ballgame, he did it. Time and again, even when he’s not at his best, Williams has found ways to put his team in a position to win. Is there still some growth that needs to be done? Absolutely. But he’s figuring out ways to win games while going through some of these growing pains. If he keeps trending upward and can put it all together, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson will have a special QB on his hands. It was so refreshing to see a Bears head coach actually productively use a bye week. Ben Johnson’s staff used the week off to self-scout and figure out how to piece together a running game. New left tackle Theo Benedet appeared to make a difference in place of Braxton Jones, and the offensive line as a whole played its best game of the season. Not only were they winning on the line of scrimmage, but they were getting to the second level effectively as well. It still might take a little time for them to gel, and Washington’s front seven isn’t exactly elite, but it was a really nice performance from the Bears on the ground after a pretty brutal one in Vegas. Not only did the Bears run the ball effectively, but they also slowed down the Commanders’ ground attack. They held Jacory Croskey-Merritt to 61 yards on the ground and came up with stops when they needed to. Getting linebacker T.J. Edwards and nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon back certainly helped, but it looked like everyone defensively had a little more jump last night. Maybe it was the week off. Perhaps it’s that the team is getting more comfortable with Dennis Allen’s system. But last night felt like a more confident bunch than the one we saw two weeks ago. One thing from last night I’d really like to see improve as the year goes on is converting turnovers into touchdowns as opposed to field goals. Don’t get me wrong, it is lovely to see the offense taking turnovers and turning them into three points. But the Bears were unable to turn either of those early turnovers into touchdowns, and while they were outplaying the commanders by a wide margin, their inability to put them away early let Washington come back into the game and take an eventual lead. Obviously, this team is still growing. But I think that’s an important next step to see them take as the year goes on. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke – Imagn Images I have no idea what was going on with the officiating last night. It was mind-bogglingly bad and inconsistent. Pick your ticky tack call — Montez Sweat’s roughing the passer, Colston Loveland’s OPI, Nahshon Wright’s facemask, Theo Benedet lined up in the backfield — all of those were just complete head scratchers and killed the Bears’ momentum at important points in the game. But credit to Ben Johnson’s squad for playing through it. Have we seen the last of Cairo Santos in a Bears uniform? I certainly think there’s a chance. The Bears can and will likely get out of Santos’ deal after this season to save some cash, and if you found a kicker you like, letting him hit the practice squad and allowing him to sign elsewhere isn’t the most prudent choice to make. I don’t want to overreact to one game, but if the Bears don’t plan on Santos being here past this year, giving Moody the first crack at the job after last night makes a lot of sense. Mandatory Credit: Peter Casey – Imagn Images D’Andre Swift deserves a game ball for his effort last night. It was his best performance as a Bear. He had been facing a lot of criticism for his inconsistent play, and I thought last night, when he really needed a good performance, he had one. He ran hard and efficiently, he followed his blockers and hit holes, he was explosive in space, and he helped seal the win on the final drive. It was great seeing him ball out with his back against the wall a bit. Speaking of game balls, give one to the entire offensive line as well. I mentioned I thought Benedet played well and helped the run game. But Joe Thuney was a monster in the middle, and Darnell Wright had his best game of the year. Drew Dalman and Jonah Jackson were solid as well, and it really feels like the more game reps this unit gets together, the more they’re starting to gel and the better they’re getting. Last night was a lot of fun. The Bears have a lot of work to do before they’re a true contender in the NFC, and they’re learning and developing on the fly this year, but they’re also winning as they go. Learning to win right now is so important for this group’s growth, and the fact that they’ve picked up two tough road games like Vegas and Washington speaks volumes for how far they’ve come and how well they’re being coached. There will still be some bumps along the road this year, but the fact that they’re figuring out how to win games despite some of those bumps is very encouraging, to say the least. Remember in the offseason when talking heads tried to say this guy was just some offensive guru who couldn’t lead a locker room?Never blinked. pic.twitter.com/fPhWgJ70QW
