In the moments after dislocating and fracturing his ankle in a gruesome injury Sunday, Fred Warner encouraged his 49ers teammates to press on in their game against the Buccaneers.
When the team could not overcome his absence, falling 30-19 in Tampa Bay, he addressed everyone in the locker room postgame.
On Monday morning, he shared a message with the many football fans who have reached out to support him after the injury. As is often the case for Warner, the 28-year-old heartbeat of the 49ers defense, it started with an optimistic tone.
“There’s certain games you wake up knowing it’s gonna be your day, and yesterday was one of those days. I knew I was bout to go off, and then boom everything over in one instant that was completely unpreventable,” he wrote in an Instagram post.
“The love everyone has shown me and the prayers being had for me mean the world to me. Some ask why I was able to smile on the cart heading in and it’s because (aside from the shock) I have complete peace in knowing Gods plan is so completely perfect and I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.”
Warner’s injury came midway through the first quarter of the matchup between NFC division leaders. After trainers examined him on the field, the four-time All-Pro was carted off the field, speaking to teammates as he went. Tatum Bethune took his spot at middle linebacker for the rest of the game and will assume the role through the end of the season.
The 49ers will have to press ahead with 11 games remaining on their schedule. Both Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams — two healthy leaders on a team that on Sunday was without Nick Bosa, Brock Purdy, George Kittle and Warner — described Warner’s injury as “heartbreaking.”

“I’ve had the privilege of being able to have a very healthy 8 seasons and now it’s time to inspire through the comeback I’m bout to have,” he wrote. “It will be LEGENDARY and right on time God willing.”
