Warnings for heavy rain and travel chaos in Spain a year after deadly floods ...Middle East

MADRID – British holidaymakers in Ibiza and northeastern Spain faced travel chaos and flooding on Monday after Storm Alice lashed the country’s Mediterranean coast – nearly a year after the country’s worst floods in living memory.

Authorities have warned parents to collect their children from schools in Ibiza and Formentera before midday as forecasters issued a yellow alert for the Balearic Islands.

“Orange warnings for very strong and persistent showers in areas of the peninsular Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands. Caution: there may be serious impacts,” state forecaster Aemet said on social media.

Local media shared videos of roaring torrents of brown water tearing through streets and submerging vehicles.

At least 24 Ibiza flights, both arriving and departing, were cancelled on Sunday evening, due to water leaking into the terminal, putting the airport out of action for more than an hour.

Despite the heavy rain in Ibiza, tourists and clubbers did not let this spoil the fun, with many dancing at the clubs’ closing parties as the holiday season came to an end.

Diario de Ibiza, a local newspaper, reported on how tourists were disregarding the rain at parties at clubs like Ushuaia.

Schools closed early on Monday as Ibiza and Formentera braced for torrential downpours as the region was swept by the storm.

In a message sent to parents, the Balearic Islands education authorities said: “Accumulated rainfall of up to 50 litres per square metre is expected, according to Aemet. The orange risk alert will remain in effect until 8am on Tuesday.”

The heavy rains started on Sunday but continued into Monday, with Aemet issuing a red alert in the province of Tarragona, a popular tourist city  in Catalonia, about 98 kilometres (61 miles) south of Barcelona.

Catalan fire service spokesman Oriol Corbella told reporters people had been caught by surprise, with people trapped “inside vehicles, in buildings, on ground floors”.

In Godall, one of the worst-affected villages in the area, terrified villagers had to take to upper floors to escape the rising waters.

“In just a few minutes, the square became a sea,” Natalia Corbalan, a resident of Godall, told La Vanguardia newspaper.

“It was terrible. We were scared and were thinking about the old people who live on the ground floors.”

Josep Lluis Gimeno, the mayor of the town of Santa Barbara, told regional television station 3Cat on Sunday that the situation was “very tense” as the night brought heavier deluges.

Local streams and ravines “are completely overflowing and have invaded the entire centre of the town, dragging everything there is, containers and cars”, he said.

Salvador Illa, the leader of Catalonia’s regional government, said all educational, sporting and social activities would be suspended on Monday in five at risk regions, urging their residents to avoid travelling and work from home.

The warnings come nearly a year after torrential rain caused the deaths of 232 people across eastern Spain, with the Valencia region one of the worst hit.
