The Georgia Bulldogs pulled out another come-from-behind SEC road win this past Saturday, putting a dagger through the heart of the Auburn Tigers with a dominant second-half performance.
While Kirby Smart’s squad was far from perfect under the lights at Jordan-Hare, they’re trademark resiliency was on full display once more as they pulled together to overcome another double-digit first-half deficit.
The gritty win earned Georgia the respect of the writers over at ESPN, as they moved the Bulldogs up a couple of spots in their most recent power rankings from No. 10 to No. 8.
While Georgia was able to pull out the win, they’re are still some pretty glaring issues that Smart and his staff must address moving forward if they want to compete come January, and ESPN Mark Schlabach says that third-down defense is priority No. 1:
If the Bulldogs are going to stay in the SEC title mix, they’re going to have to figure out a way to get opponents off the field on third down. The Bulldogs rank 13th in the league in that area, allowing their opponents to convert 40.2% of the time. By comparison, when Georgia won its second straight CFP national title during the 2022 season, it led the SEC and ranked No. 2 in the FBS at 26.6%… Auburn had a 75-yard touchdown drive to start the game and controlled the ball for nearly 22 minutes in the first half, converting 8 of 11 third downs along the way. The Bulldogs have made great adjustments at halftime of games, but they need to do better coming out of the gates.
If Smart can figure out how to get his defense off the field more consistently on third down moving forward, then the Dawgs could still end up contending come January.
