Drake Maye showing Bears and Commanders they were wrong to overlook him for Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels ...Middle East

Say it quietly… but the New England Patriots might just have found their guy.

Five years have passed since Tom Brady waved goodbye to Foxborough and shattered one of the NFL‘s greatest-ever dynasties.

Maye could be the man to launch the Patriots back to Super Bowl successGetty

He left behind Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft and a team that needed to replace a six-time Super Bowl champion who had already established himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks in history before adding another ring in Tampa Bay.

Coach Belichick, of course, has also since moved on.

His parting gift to the Pats was a 4-13 finish in 2023, and one of football’s greatest minds now risks wrecking his own legacy with a wretched tenure at the helm of the Tar Heels.

Back in New England, though, and things are now looking rosy for the first time since the Brady-Belichick dynasty crumbled.

That’s all thanks to Drake Maye, the second-year star who has bounced back from a rocky rookie season to become a genuine MVP candidate through six weeks of the 2025 NFL season.

Alongside head coach Mike Vrabel, the 23-year-old signal caller is putting down the building blocks that should one day catapult the Patriots back to Super Bowl glory.

Maye could also make the ever-cursed Chicago Bears, and even the Washington Commanders, regret passing over him in the 2024 draft.

Drake Maye ‘ideal’ for new Patriots era

Brian T. Smith, talkSPORT’s Senior US Writer, believes the third overall pick has shown more than Caleb Williams (who was taken No.1) in the pros.

On current form, he is even playing better than reigning MVP Josh Allen, and has already found his perfect fit in New England.

“Drake Maye was a huge risk entering the 2024 NFL Draft,” Smith said of the second-year QB.

Maye is playing at MVP level through six weeks of his second NFL seasonGetty

“He was inexperienced, hard to evaluate, and bounced between boom or bust in every mock.

“Right now, the Patriots are 4-2 because Maye is the ideal QB for New England in the Mike Vrabel-era.

“Maye is playing better than Josh Allen and the North Carolina kid is living in the end zone.

“He is also outproducing Caleb Williams, which has to be concerning to Bears fans.

“With Tennessee and Cleveland up next on New England’s schedule, the new Pat is going to be an MVP contender if he keeps slinging easy TDs.”

Through six weeks of the season, the Pats have already won as many games in 2025 as they did across 17 weeks in 2024.

New England look like genuine contenders in the AFC once again, and will have real aspirations of reaching the postseason, despite sharing a division with the Super Bowl favorite Buffalo Bills.

Vrabel’s team currently has a 69% chance of reaching the playoffs, per ESPN, and Maye is on course to challenge for MVP honors.

He currently boasts the second-highest completion percentage (73.2%) amongst NFL quarterbacks, behind only Detroit Lions star Jared Goff (75.9%).

Daniel Jones, Dak Prescott and Lamar Jackson round out the top five.

Maye is also a top five QB when it comes to passing yards. Through six games of the season, he has thrown for 1,522.

Only Matthew Stafford, Prescott, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield have generated more yards through the air.

Maye has already thrown 10 touchdowns this year, and added two on the ground. His two interceptions are also on the lower end of the scale.

He’s shown serious improvement since his rookie season, which was by no means poor itself.

In 2024, Maye boasted a 66.6% completion rate, with 2,276 yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

The Patriots weren’t winning games, though. They finished with 3-9 in the 12 games Maye started.

This year, New England have started 4-2, with wins against the Bills, Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints.

There are two more winnable games, against the Titans and Browns, to come in the next couple of weeks.

Maye had a breakout performance against MVP Allen and the BillsGetty

Realistically, the Pats could be 6-2 by the time November rolls around, and the sky is the limit for their young signal caller.

“He’s continuing to grow and gain confidence, and show us, show everybody, show his team and himself the ability to operate in the pocket, ability to operate in scheduled, move the pocket plays and then also off-schedule,” Vrabel said of Maye, after a breakout performance in Buffalo.

Will the Bears and Commanders regret passing on Maye?

The 2024 quarterback class was stacked with talent, and while it was Jayden Daniels who grabbed headlines in his rookie season, Maye is the one who has stood out in Year 2.

Daniels was selected by the Commanders second overall in the 2024 draft.

The Commanders will be happy with drafting Daniels, but Maye is matching himGetty

He set a number of rookie records while leading the Commanders to their first NFC Championship Game appearance since 1991, and earned Offensive Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl honors.

Those in Washington will no doubt be happy with their pick 18 months on from the draft, and the team is 3-2 heading into Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears.

The same might not be said for their opponents.

With No. 1 pick Williams thrown into the deep end, Chicago finished 2024 with a 5-12 record. Head coach Matt Eberflus was fired in November as the team struggled to find their identity.

Ben Johnson, who impressed as offensive coordinator in Detroit and was the NFL’s most sought-after head coach candidate, arrived during the offseason.

Maye could make Chicago passing on him in 2024 if he continues to outplay WilliamsGetty

There has been some improvement, with Chicago sitting 2-2 in 2025, but Williams is yet to explode as many had hoped.

Right now, Maye is outperforming Williams, who has a far less flattering 62.3% completion rate, 927 yards and eight TDs through five weeks.

Whether the Bears and Commanders one day regret passing on Maye is widely irrelevant, and all that matters is what happens in New England.

The Patriots are now five years removed from the unforgettable success of the Brady-Belichick era, and while that might never be seen again, Maye and Vrabel are giving Pats fans plenty to shout about in 2025.
