Brought in over the weekend, this change in law will see heightened security measures taken at borders.

These booths take road users’ photographs and fingerprint information in a move to boost security.
This new system will replace traditional passport stamps and will affect every road user heading to Europe, regardless of their vehicle.
It was expected to launch back in 2022 but has faced numerous delays.
New system
“This is a new digital border system that will change requirements for British citizens travelling to the Schengen area,” said GOV.UK.
“If you are travelling to a country in the Schengen area for a short stay using a UK passport, you will be required to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo, when you arrive.”
The statement clarified that tourists do not need to take any action before arriving at the border and there is no cost for EES registration.
“After it is fully implemented, EES registration will replace the current system of manually stamping passports when visitors arrive in the EU,” the statement explained.
Any motorist who refuses to provide biometric data will simply be denied entry into the territory of the European countries.
Port of Dover
Dozens of new booth have been added to the Port of Dover and have been in operation since Sunday, October 12.
While each vehicle was processed and passed through security in 60 seconds under the previous system, experts claim the new format could take around six minutes per car.
Motorists will be required to get out of their cars and register at the kiosks.
The Port of Dover said it will eventually have 84 kiosks in place, ensuring tourists won’t have to sit in long queues to register.
Doug Bannister, the port’s chief executive officer, said “facilities are all in place” and there “won’t be any delays”.
“We’ve designed this all with the intention that we won’t have any queuing on the external road network close to the port,” he added.
EES
The EES will replace manual stamping of passports for non-EU visitors to the Schengen area. Non-EU visitors will scan their travel documents at a self-service kiosk or gate. The system will capture biometric data, including facial images and fingerprints, which will be stored for three years. This data collection is primarily done on a traveler’s first trip after the system is implemented. Automated barriers will also be used to verify data on subsequent trips. The EES is being implemented gradually over a six-month period, with full operation expected by April 10, 2026.More on motors
