However, Savage left to become manager of National League side Forest Green Rovers in July.

Three months into the job, the former Prem star has eight wins from 14 games under his belt.

With Forest Green second in the table, his short-term goal is to lead the club back to the Football League.

But in the long term, Savage has high hopes of going far in management.

Speaking to The Times recently, he admitted that he would love to manage the Wales national team in future.

He said: “Will I ever be good enough? Who knows, but if it [the Wales job] did come, it would be after I’ve had ten or 15 years as a manager.

“I might have two, if I don’t do very well here, who knows.

He also made appearances at U18s level and played for the U21s.

Savage also responded to the love/hate attitude he gets from fans.

He said: “I know a lot of people want me to fall flat. I know it.”

The former Manchester United man later explained: “What I’m trying to do is treat every player like I would want to be treated and how my son would be treated.

“I try to be a passionate, caring manager who thinks he can get the best out of players.

“So I’ve taken all my experiences as a player knowing how insecure I was and how I was a worrier and I see the same with my son.

“He’s coming home with possibly the same insecurities, so I tell him to go and see the manager. Go and ask him questions because you’re allowed to.

“You’re allowed to ask questions. Why aren’t you on the team? What do you need to do better? Communication is key.”

Savage’s son, Charlie, currently plays for Reading in League One.

He also has two caps for the Wales national team.
