On Saturday, the Smother star passed away in California at the age of 79, as confirmed by a family spokesperson who told People magazine, which first reported the news.
The Oscar-winning actress is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke.
In addition, she also starred in the 2018 rom-com Book Club, which also stars Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen and Jane Fonda.
In an Instagram post shared after the news broke, Fonda admitted that she struggled to “accept” that Keaton was gone.
A post shared by Jane Fonda (@janefonda)
“It’s hard to believe...or accept…that Diane has passed. She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man, she was a fine actress!” she wrote.
“Watching The Family Stone this Christmas will hit a lot harder. I loved her,” one wrote.
Gold Coast star Mary Steenburgen also took to the comments section to share her heartbreak, writing, “Yes, hard to believe. Perfect tribute to the American treasure that was Diane.”
After filming Book Club, Fonda told Today that “real friendships were formed” even though it was their first time working together.
