Dave Allen gave the ultimate compliment to Arslanbek Makkhmudov after their heavyweight duel.
Allen was denied the chance to put his name amongst some big names in the heavyweight division, as he fell to a devastating defeat against Russian giant Makhmudov in Sheffield.
GettyMakhmudov battered Allen with some big shots, and the ‘White Rhino’ claimed he’d never felt anything like it[/caption]It was a brutal and gruelling night for the ‘White Rhino’ who took some damaging and clubbing punishment from the 6ft 5ins behemoth.
During his time in the paid ranks, Allen had already shared the squared circle with some heavy-handed operators including Dillian Whyte and Luis Ortiz.
But the Doncaster native was quick to ignore previous bouts when discussing how the shots that he received were by far the hardest he has faced in his career.
He said immediately after the final bell: “He is the scariest looking man I have ever seen but he is a sweetheart.
“He was too big and too good. I have never been hit or hurt like that in my life.
“He had me hurt about five times and Jamie [Moore, Allen’s trainer] wanted to pull me out.
“But I am a tough man, I have never been down.”
It was a remarkable admission from Allen who has been around the block and met some devastating units.
Allen has even sparred the very elite of the current crop of heavyweights including Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.
But it was unclear if he included training rounds in his post-fight workings.

Dave Allen’s previous foes
Allen has become a cult hero on British shores, with the brave and spirited heavyweight having shared rounds with some of the best.
In two of his biggest duels, Allen had a busy 2016 where he fought and was beaten by Whyte and Ortiz.
The latter was able to stop the promising Brit, who never quite managed to edge into world level.
Tony Yoka, Frazer Clarke and David Price are other names to have beaten Allen inside the distance.
But he remains one of the most experienced operators on the British circuit, so his high praise of Makhmudov comes as a glowing review for the Russian’s power.
What next for Dave Allen?
Allen will fight on despite his eighth career defeatMark Robinson / Matchroom BoxingAllen has now, in his words, missed a golden opportunity to earn bigger paydays and brush shoulders with higher level operators in 2026.
And some have called for the Briton to fall on his shield and call it a day after a long and gruelling career.
But the spirited Yorkshire slugger insisted he would not be turning his back on the sport, and still believes he has what it takes to compete at British level.
He added: “I nearly cried because of the crowd, I had to choke it back. I am not finished.
“I am not finished, I am not finished. I am not the best but these fans make me feel like I am the best.”
